Excellent Collection of Early Church Documents by Moody Press  Jun 1, 2010
This volume is one of about 12 books in a series called Moody Classics. This particular book is entitled "The Apostolic Fathers." It contains a modern English translation of seven important non-biblical writings during the early Church period--the first and second centuries. These writings are not scripture, that is, they are not inspired documents like the 66 books of the biblical cannon. However, much can be learned about early church life, sermons, and discipline, persecution and martyrdom, as well as the use of allegorical fiction along the same lines of John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress.

The book opens with a Forward by Mark Galli, Senior Managing Editor of Christianity Today magazine, who provides a brief synopsis of each of the seven writings. Each chapter is dedicated to a separate document.

1. Clement: A letter to the church at Corinth.
2. Clement: An early Christian sermon.
3. Letters of Ignatius: Letters he wrote on his way to Rome to be executed.
4. Letter of Polycarp to the Philippians: A letter to the church at Philippi.
5. The Martyrdom of Polycarp: The oldest martyr account outside of the NT.
6. Didache: Meaning "teaching," a manual of church discipline.
7. The Pastor of Hermas: An early form of Christian allegorical writing.

Unlike the writings of the Jewish historian Josephus, the documents in this volume are highly regarded writings of pastors and other early Christian church writers. Basic and reliable background and reference material is essential to any believer's understanding of New Testament scripture and a must for the library of those who take serious their study of the Bible--this kind of material is not always easy to come by. Moody Press has combined an excellent collection of helpful documents into one volume (317 pages), in a clear, easy to read format. If you ever wished you could be around in the first and second centuries to get a first-hand look at how the very young Christian church developed, handled problems, and to even hear a sermon from that era, here is your opportunity. Recommended.
Great Lesson in Church History  Oct 9, 2009
So often times I felt like the Christianity I practiced was watered down and all based on 'feel good' theology. I had no idea! This book opened my eyes to how the people who were actually taught by the apostles and even appointed by the apostles to leadership roles in the Church believed and practiced their faith! Some of these letters even pre-date the older books of the Bible!

This book is not scripture but it does give us valuable insight into how those who wrote the scripture taught others to interpret it and hand it on down to other generations.
Now modern era Christians have an excellent English translation of seven key and primary documents  Aug 17, 2009
Between the deaths of the apostles and the emerging dominance of the Roman popes, the Christian movement depended upon the sermons, writings, and correspondences of an intermediate group of church leaders. This group of pious men became known as the Apostolic Fathers and their writings, while not on the same status as the canonical books of the Old and New Testament, were still regarded with great respect by their contemporaries and their successors within the Christian movement. Now modern era Christians have an excellent English translation of seven key and primary documents with the new Moody Press edition of "The Apostolic Fathers". These writings include 1 Clement (a letter to the Church); 2 Clement (an early Christian sermon); Letters of Ignatius (correspondences written by a pastor on his way to Rome to be executed for his beliefs); Letter of Polycarp to the Phillipians (a letter to the Church at Philippi); The Martyrdom of Polycarp (the oldest surviving account of a martyrdom outside of the New Testament); and The Pastor of Herman (an early form of allegorical fiction along the lines of 'Pilgrim's Progress'). Of special note is the informed and informative introduction, historical background, and succinct descriptions of these writings in Mark Galli's deftly written foreword. "The Apostolic Fathers" is very highly recommended reading for theology students and non-specialist general readers with an interest in early Church history.
