Reviews - What do our customers think?
Great Book  Aug 21, 2009
This book is a must-read for anybody interested in Christianity, whether a believer or not. Rev. Lathrop does an excellent job of laying out - through sound biblical exegesis - the Pentecostal position regarding apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. The author uses a very simple, easy-to-read format that allows the book to be used for either personal study, group study, or a laid back read for those of us who have an obsession with reading. John Lathrop is very careful in his research, and his scholarship is fascinating. I would recommend this book to clergy, lay people, and students alike.

Impressive teaching  Oct 28, 2008
John Lathrop's "Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Teachers, Pastors, then and now".
Review by Nancy Hudson, missionary in South Africa

In reading John Lathrop's book, I was so impressed by the depth and clarity of his teaching on the "five fold ministry", as the church has defined it today, and his "then and now" teaching.
I was most impressed at the simplicity, yet deep explanation Scripturally
of each ministry: what they are, how one becomes each, the ministry of each one, and the authority of each one and where they are today.
As a missionary, church planter in South Africa, the ministry of an apostle especially encouraged me. The book is an excellent teaching tool on these ministries and one I will surely use here.....

Perfect as a Study Guide  Aug 19, 2008
This short book is perfect as a guide for individual or group Bible study on Ephesians 4:11, because it is simple and easy to read, contains myriad scripture and cross-references, poses as many questions as it answers, and leaves parts of the topic area unexplored. The guide's text is not peppered with entertaining anecdotes, but rather concisely treats the subject matter.

For example, included in his discussion of apostles, Rev. Lathrop briefly examines a theory that the Twelve and Paul were "apostles of Christ," whereas others called "apostle" in scripture were only "messengers from the churches." He cites, but never completely answers, how then Paul could have named Silas and Timothy "apostles of Christ" in 1 Thessalonians. These kinds of questions frequently make for excellent group discussion.

One thing notably missing from the book is an index of scripture verses. Overall, however, it serves. While Rev. Lathrop pulls no punches, he also does not foment dissent. He treats the subject from a sound, biblical theology, and goes no further than that. Therefore, while not an exciting read on its own, it has the elements to make for stimulating personal or group study. Try out this book with an eye toward a series of Bible studies on the topic.

Biblical Ministry  Jul 31, 2008
John Lathrop's interest in Bible defined ministry is refreshingly honest. He has assumed a position of ignorance and has surrendered to the Biblical text in a most sincere effort to learn what its pages taught on the subject. As a read, his book is interesting and factual. If you have an interest in circumventing theological bias and get at the truth about basic bible based ministry, get this book.
