Item Description...
This work is about the various ways in which the Book of Revelation (the Apocalypse) has been interpreted over the last 300 years. It examines in detail Methodist, Baptist, English Anglican, and Roman Catholic uses of Revelation from 1600 to 1800, and then American Millerism and Seventh-day Adventist uses from 1800 on. The book argues that, far from being a random sequence of bizarre statements, millennial schemes (including the setting of dates for the second coming of Christ) are more often characterized by complex and internally consistent interpretations of scripture. As an example, the work of David Koresh is examined at length. Koresh, clearly had views which some would find odd. However, his interpretation of scripture did not lack system or context, and to see him in that light is to begin to understand why his message had appeal.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
A Jaded Viewpoint Of An Unenlightened Historian  Apr 23, 2005
Mr. Newport appears to approach his study of other people's opinions on the book of Revelation purely from a materialistic point of view. Why would anyone want to buy a book about a world-weary viewpoint concerning substance that is of a spiritual nature? All one has to do is read four verses from Revelation (1:3; 22:7,18-19) to realize that it is a supernatural book, which Newport smugly disavows. Newport's book is disguised as an "intellectual" examination, but it is truly one of the worst pieces of overpriced nonsense on the market. Save your money for other things, unless you need an extravagant doorstop.
Vitally Important Book  Nov 26, 2001
Given the remarkable growth in apocalyptic speculation, especially since September 11, this book is extremely important. It is important because it reminds us that the speculation surrounding the end of the world has been with us for centuries. Not only that, but it has been a weapon to denigrate other movements and groups. For all those millions of Americans who are buying evangelical books on how September 11 fulfils Biblical prophecy, this book is an absolute must.
Apocalypse and Millenium Review  Oct 22, 2000
This book is very informative and offers the reader a direct and unbiased interpretation of pratical events relating to the end of the world and how many religious fanatics have interpreted the Millennium as the end of the world. In the last chapter it concentrates on the Waco issue and shows a clear understanding of both the FBI/ATF and David Koresh's views and methods with his own knowledge of the subject and brilliant illustration using actual audio recordings of the Waco conversations between Koresh and the FBI. This book is a good buy if you want it specifically and not just as a general interest.
