Short on Commentary for the People  Apr 8, 2007
Pablo Richard introduces his commentary with some basic guidelines for interpretation. Revelation arises in situations of chaos, exclusion, and ongoing oppression. Revelation was an important movement in early Christianity whose eschatology "takes place basically in the present." Expressed in myths and symbols, it discloses the transcendent. "The Revelation of John unites apocalypse and prophecy." Revelation should be understood in its own time and place. With these basic guidelines, Richard goes on to offer an exegetical study of the text of The Revelation of John (hereafter JRev).

This book will probably be frustrating reading for most readers. In his introduction, Richard jumps between discussions of revelation, apocalyptic literature, and the Revelation of John not being clear to his reader which he has in mind. For example, he might have done better to write that while revelation (from God) arises in situations of chaos, but apocalyptic literature is an important movement in early Christianity. (It also was an important part of Second Temple Judaism.) The exegetical study of the text of JRev will probably be tedious for most readers. There are numerous analyses of the structure of the text along with seemingly endless word studies.

For me, the most disappointing part was the mere page and a half given to the subject of the meaning of JRev for our own time. Foremost for Richard is the moderation of the radical fundamentalistic apocalypticism of our modern times. (I agree that this is important, but JRev was not written to moderate those who have found a way to interpret it in a radical fashion. That was not a purpose of the book. That is a problem with interpretation of the book.) JRev can help us rebuild our own vision of history. "Finally Revelation (i.e., JRev) is having a decisive influence especially in the so-called Third World ... in the reconstruction of liberating theologies." Unfortunately that is it.

Richard's title suggests that he might have something to say as far as Latin American liberation theology, but his book is short on commentary for the people.

Apocalypse -- a positive spin on the Book of Revelation  Apr 14, 2000
Pablo Richard's Apocalypse is an excellent step by step walk through the Book of revelation, especially helpful for the first time reader of this last book in the Bible. Richard's viewpoint is of one who identifies with the poor, excluded and outcast of the world and his interpretation of Revelation shows his personal commitment to liberation theology. His main point is that Revelation primarily exists to reflect God and Jesus Christ's presence in the here and now in support of the poor, outcast and excluded and against the foces of evil -- in Revelation the Roman Empire and its vassal states -- in our modern world, the commercial, political, and social system that also excludes and oppresses. Revelation, he says, is not about the end of history, but about our interaction with God to change the course of history to match God's intent and thereby bring about a new, transcendent history -- the new Jerusalem.
