Publishers Description
Several modern interpretations of Paul's letter to the Galatians claim to uncover an underlying attitude of anti-Judaism. Michael Bachmann refutes those claims with his own detailed exegesis and astute examination of comparative material from the religious environment of that day, revealing instead how Paul embraces both Jews and Gentiles. Bachmann holds that, in the determination of meaning, the literary context of Galatians should be considered over historical background. / Nonetheless, he does engage parallels in Qumran material and archaeology as secondary methods to confirm his exegetical arguments. Through his rigorous examination, Bachmann shows that Galatians exhibits evidence of anti-Judaism not in itself, but only in its reception. / Rich in scholarship and sound exegesis, Anti-Judaism in Galatians? is an ideal text for scholars and students seeking the whole truth about Paul.

Great scholarship but disappointing interpretation...  Feb 12, 2010

Personally I did not find this book helpful in opening up meaning in Paul's letter to the churches in Galatia. Yes the scholarship is there as half of the book is footnoted with index of authors, scriptures, and a brief bibliographical appendix (110 pages) while Bachmann's text is 123 pages. His six articles deal with important questions such as the letters relationship to 4QMMT (where he largely interacts with James D. G. Dunn), covenantal nomism (where he examines a sixth century synagogue mosaic), The Mediator of Galatians 3.20, justification and works of the law (chapter one, which is probably best of the six), his chapter five which discusses Gal 4.21-5.1 where he contrasts two stain glass windows from the Freiburg Cathedral (circa 13th/14th c.) and his interesting discussion of "the Israel of God" in 6.16.

The problem with this book on Galatians is that such scholars are asking the wrong questions due to wrong presuppositions!! Questions of who the audience is and why is Paul writing must be answered first before any discussion of interpretation occurs. Simply yet importantly put, Paul is writing to Gentiles. He is saying things to Gentiles concerning their relationship to Torah now that Christ has come. He is NOT writing to Jews. He is not explaning Torah to Jews. Torah is not for Gentiles but Jews so why should he explain how to live according to Torah to Gentiles when it is not for them. Christ is for the Gentiles. Torah is for Jews. Of course if we think Paul is writing to Jews in Galatians his statements can be considered anti-Jewish. His "negative" interpretaions of Torah are only as such for the Gentile reader who tries to live by Torah. There is no negative aspects to Torah observance for THE JEW but only for THE GENTILE. So come on scholars understand WHO Paul is writing to and then you won't start of on the wrong foot asking the wrong questions the text is not addressing!
