Educated at Prince Edward College, Charlottetown, and Dalhousie University, she embarked on a career in teaching. From 1898 until 1911 she took care of her maternal grandmother in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, and during this time wrote many poems and stories for Canadian and American magazines. Montgomery's first novel, Anne of Green Gables, met with immediate critical and popular acclaim, and its success, both national and international, led to seven sequels. Maud Montgomery also wrote the popular Emily of New Moon in 1923 followed by two sequels, and Pat of Silver Bush in 1933 with its sequel. L. M. Montgomery died in Toronto in 1942, but it is her early years of lush, green Prince Edward Island that live on in the delightful adventures of the impetuous redhead, the stories Mark Twain called "the sweetest creation of child life yet written."

Reviews - What do our customers think?
enjoy a classic  May 15, 2008
If your looking for a classic book in small children language, this is the book. I felt that this book did a well job in introducing Anne Shirley to my young daughter. The book is tended for 1st through 3rd grade students. It is well written. If you loved reading about Anne Shirley while you were growing up, and wish to have your daughters find out about this wonderful girl, then this book is for you.
My Happy book  Mar 5, 2008
As a child I remember a teacher telling us to think of our "Happy Place" when things weren't going well, this book has become my "happy book" over the years. When I'm sad, bored or sick, I like to curl up in a chair and travel into Anne's world, it is like a comforting friend. Anne of Green Gables spans the generations - I've spent many hours reliving passages with my 80 yr old Grandmother. She will often laugh about a day being a "Jonas Day" or someone being a "kindred spirit". I think there is a little bit of Anne (with an e) in all of us. Once you read these books the innocence and passion of Anne seems to remain with you forever, no matter how old you get.
A Well-Remembered Classic  Jan 23, 2008
As far as classic historical novels go, Anne of Green Gables is one of the best. As imaginative Anne Shirely is adopted by Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, a brother and sister on Prince Edward Island, the reader is treated to numerous adventures as Anne does her best to stay out of trouble. Trouble always finds her, and Anne treats us to lessons in keeping control of imagination, accepting and loving our looks, and how doing the right thing will always work out in the end. The language in the book is beautiful and while reviewing it I was remembering my pure delight as I read the book at age twelve, identifying with Anne Shirley 100%. As a positive psychologist I'm sure that your "tween" daughter will definitely relate to Anne and her adventures.
Review of Anne of Green Gables  Feb 6, 2007
"I'll try and do anything and be anything you want,if you'll just keep me!" Poor Anne, she wants to stay with Matthew and Marilla, but do they want her?
Anne of Green Gables, written by L.M. Montgomery, is about an eleven-year-old redheaded orphan who longs to be adopted by a loving and caring family. This older brother and sister, Matthew and Marilla, had been expecting a boy to help with their farm in Avonlea, Cananda. However, Anne wins their hearts and becomes their special adopted daughter. They all have many funny experiences getting to know one another. Later, Anne meets Dianna, and they become best friends. They have many exciting and silly adventures. Both love reading and have great imaginations, although Anne's imagination sometimes goes too far! She speaks whatever is on her mind and many times ends up in trouble because of talking without thinking!
Anne of Green Gables is an excellent book full of Anne's adventures and imaginative ideas! I recommend this book to young adults or to anybody who likes reading about adventurous girls. Stephanie Cox
Review of Anne of Green Gables  Feb 6, 2007
In Anne of Green Gables, L.M. Montgomery's exciting story, Anne wants to be adopted by a famly who loves her. This imaginative, eleven year old, red-headed orphan girl changes Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert's lives forever.
Matthew and Marilla had wanted an orphan boy to help on the farm in Canada, but the orphanage sent Anne instead. Anne is spunky, adventurous, talkative, and fun to be around. She enjoys reading and using her imagination. Her best friend, Diana, and she have many exciting and funny adventures together. Anne does not like to do what she is told to do, but she'll do almost anything people dare her to do. Will Matthew and Marilla keep this lively young girl?
In my opinion I recommend this book to girls of ages 11 and older or for anyone that enjoys stories about adventurous girls. This book is definitely worth reading. Jonathan Cox
