Color it True  Nov 23, 2007
As an artist I can truly appreciate the wonderful illustrative quality of Ms. Showalter works. For her first book her use of color is excellent. I am looking forward to buying the next book that Ms. Showalter illustrates whatever it may be. Good Luck Ms. Showalter
All This and Lesson Plans Too  Nov 18, 2007
The 26 two-page spreads, with single-sentence text on one side and gorgeous, expressive illustrations on the other, make this a top-notch picture book for children aged 2 to 8. The seven Pages for Grownups at the end, with a compact lesson for each animal story, are more than icing on the cake. The teaching guides contain a copy of the text, scripture citations related to the animals depicted, a short statement of the lesson to be learned, and suggestions for using the stories for religious education at home and in the classroom.

In her introduction, Camille explains that the animals she chose highlight a virtue, such as self control; symbolize a desirable characteristic, such as trust in God; or warn of wickedness, such as greed. As an example, let's look at "V is for vipers that resemble nasty folks." The illustration depicts three angry priests. One points a finger in Jesus' face; another crosses his arms and glares; and the third clenches his fists and squints his eyes while puffs of smoke exude from his head. Three intertwined vipers mirror the gestures and expressions of the priests.

The grown-up reference for "V" is taken from Matthew's gospel in which Jesus uses the term "brood of vipers," a phrase, Camille tells us, first used by John the Baptist. The lesson topic is "hypocrisy, being true, inside and out." In her reflection, the author emphasizes that the viper isn't just doing bad things, but is pretending to do good while really doing wrong. She shares a story about third-graders who understood the concept of hypocrisy quickly, and suggests that they might be less familiar with the idea of integrity. The teaching section ends with "We don't want to look or act like a bunch of snakes! We want to be true like Jesus."
A fun and adventurous book to read aloud   Nov 5, 2007
Animals of the Bible from A to Z is a Christian ABC book for young children. Each two-page spread associates a different animal mentioned in the Bible with a letter of the alphabet, along with a simple color illustration. A fun and adventurous book to read aloud to young people and help them learn their ABCs. "X is for the extra-special donkey that could talk! / Y is for the yearling lamb that gave his life for Jesus."
Appetite for storytelling  Sep 8, 2007
Like the generations of children who have enjoyed the lessons of the animals in Aesop's Fables, this book offers a treat for children whose parents or grandparents enjoy engaging them in the wonder of story. Leading the way on each page is an animal, delightfully illusrated, and a description that begins with "A is for....." to whet the appetite for the story. Alice Camille provides that story in a "behind the scenes" section at the end of the book which contains not only the story and a lesson, but also the bible reference that could be read also. And there you have it all--a picture to enjoy, a story to tell, and a lesson to be learned.
An ABC Book with Style  Aug 27, 2007
It's about time. An ABC book that has something to offer beyond A is an apple. A "Bible book" that is neither preachy nor boring. A spiririual book for children and adults alike, offering the young and old reader engaging art, and a platform for further questions. An instructional book, allowing for a quick read or a detailed discussion of the Bible story shown and the lesson within it.

What a find! I'll be buying several copies of this one, as I want my own, would like one available for my kids and would like to share this book with others. Good work!
