Item Description...
Overview
A riveting record of an unusual journey by Courtney Cowart, a theologian who witnessed the two greatest catastrophes in recent American history - the 9/11 tragedy at the World Trade Center and the devastation of Hurricane Katrina - and how the author actively participated in the healing of both. An American Awakening spans the time from September 11, 2001, through the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina in 2007. Beginning in New York, this account reveals Cowart's role in the Ground Zero recovery ministry at St. Paul's Chapel, "The Little Church That Stood," across the street from the World Trade Center. This gripping memoir presents the spiritual commitments made when the author's life was spared on 9/11, and how these commitments eventually led her to answer the call to serve in New Orleans. It is an engrossing account of Cowart's experience in post-Katrina New Orleans as director of the Office of Disaster Response for the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana, a post she accepted after her life-changing experience at Ground Zero. Cowart is probably the only American spiritual leader called to a sustained, front-line role in both the 9/11 and Katrina disasters, and this is the first and only memoir of that dual experience.

An American Awakening: From Ground Zero to Katrina  May 25, 2010
This is a remarkable personal account in the moment and in the shadow of the world trade towers on September 11 and in the flood zone of Katrina, by Courtney Cowart. It is a inspiring look at the beauty and triumph that can rise up from utter destruction. I highly recommend this book, it is a way to restore faith in humanity.

This book is powerfully honest and inspiring!  May 17, 2009
I recommend highly this well-written book by Courtney Cowart, as it is personal, honest, gripping, informative, hopeful and inspiring!

Good memoir, except...  Mar 29, 2009
Courtney Cowart does an excellent job describing her encounters with the 9/11 and Katrina tragedies. Obviously, thse events have had a profound effect on her life, especially as a Chirstian and as a clergywoman. When it comes to Katrina, I found myself refreshing my own memories of that disaster as I read her version of it. However, she does not make one distinction in her book: the 9/11 events were caused by vicious human hands and, as such, are an example of how men can cause unspeakable suffering upon others by ignoring God and going about their own evil desires. And the 9/11 terrorist attacks were only the beginning of several such attacks which have permeated the beginning of the new milleniun. Katrina, however, brought back the reminder that man is still subject to the forces of nature, and it will take fervent prayer to God to get hold of Mother Nature to prevent such disasters from happenig again.

Truly Inspiring!  Dec 4, 2008
"An American Awakening" by Courtney Cowart is an inspiring and motivating true story of the author's own experiences with September 11th and Hurricane Katrina. Her writing engulfed me into her stories of those she helped and took care of during both of these tragedies. It shows Cowart's own transformation through all of her selfless generosity as she dives into helping rebuild both of these cities. It is a call to action for all who read it and shows what a difference one person can make. Beautifully written, it shows what we can all do in this new period in American history. A Must Read!

Love Truth Enough To Live It  Nov 30, 2008
For readers and book buyers interested in new works that are written to support post-election civic conversations and actions you should check out this Philadelphia indie bookstore's recent newsletter highlighting An American Awakening:

[..]

Could we be seeing the early edge of a new literary phenomenon? It was intriguing to read on [...] regular blog, "Shelf Awareness," that indie stores specializing in a spectrum of progressive religion and spirituality books are beginning to view the Obama genre as an extension of the spirituality category. In the long tradition of American civil religion, theologians who view the church as a people called to embody a social alternative, and political writers concerned with a fuller embodiment of progressive democratic values do find much common ground.

Are we entering an era under the leadership of Obama when citizenship, as it is being defined by the country's new leader, begins to be viewed (once again) as a spiritual enterprise demanding growth in altruistic virtues? If so, will we see narratives that describe how Americans have chosen and sustained these kinds of impassioned commitments in recent years and historically, proliferating on the country's best-seller lists?

It is interesting to consider the possibility that with the new craze for a heightened form of altruistic citizen engagement, and the choice to live into its challenges taken up by millions, a new genre of progressive civic-spirituality titles may quickly emerge. If so, An American Awakening may prove to be ahead of the pack. It is definitely all about what it takes to live the vision set forth by Obama's campaign - as one reviewer put it "an account of day-to-day care and generosity that is marked by faith and that smacks of courageous staying power, that invites recovery of human dignity, neighborly solidarity and active hope."
