Item Description...
As struggles over the global war on terrorism continue to rage, many in the United States and around the world do not understand the course of events that led from September 11, 2001, to the current expanded conflict. In this careful, lucid exploration of the elements in America's civil religion that have steered the country on its present course, a path to understanding emerges. A German who has called Europe, Central America, and North America home at various times in his life, Geiko Muller-Fahrenholz has the perspective of an outsider who yet loves the United States, making him uniquely qualified to present a portrait of how the U.S. is perceived throughout the world and how the current religious factor in American politics can look like a pious cloak thrown over national selfishness. He uniquely blends historical, theological, political, and cultural-psychological perspectives, offering a thoughtful, nuanced view of the complex American situation. In exploring super-patriotism, the "lost opportunity" of 9/11, and the dangerous clash of fundamentalisms, Muller-Fahrenholz boldly yet empathetically confronts America with its image in the eyes of the world - and with the urgent need to reevaluate its core values in a global perspective.

Reading for Mature Americans  Aug 8, 2008
By Geiko Muller-Fahrenholz
(this site Book Review)

Geiko Muller-Fahrenholz, a Christian theologian, has written a unique and gripping commentary, from the standpoint of a German, who loves America and has considerable familiarity with the United States, gained as a former student in this country, on the way that religion has been inculcated into American culture.

As examples of the infiltration of religion into the body politic, one needs only to observe the American flags in many churches, the motto, "In God we Trust" on our coins, and the addition of the phrase "under God" to the pledge of allegiance. The thoughtful reader will be able to add to the list.

While the author is conscious of the enormous good that the US has done in the world in his lifetime, nevertheless many Americans will find this book painful and should expect to have the maturity of their patriotism challenged. He compares the US response to 9/11 to the story of Frauenkirche (Our Lady's Church), which was obliterated during WWII and suggests that there "could be a lesson in the ways Europe has emerged for the horrors of World War II that citizens of the United States may wish to study."

Revealing quotations of George W. Bush shed light on the rationale used by the United States in responding to 9/11 that the reader will find insightful.

There are numerous footnotes for serious and continued study, but on the downside, there is no index--a real disadvantage!

This is a must read for all American's and certainly all prople who in any way touch the Christian faith. It will make one stop and see why the rest of the world, expecially the European countries question and do not accept America' self appraisal and globel goals. This is a book filled with looking inwared at who America has been and what America has become. Very strong opinons from an excellent writer who dares to shake the thoughts of all.
