Reviews - What do our customers think?
Reviewed by Michelle Boucher-Ladd  Jan 25, 2007
Ever wonder what kind of mind set it would take to be an American Soldier? In this tiny book are ten short stories from the front lines of Iraq and Afghanistan entwined with graphic art and inspired photography. They are stories that invoke motivation, courage, and faith, and pay tribute to the modern American Soldier. The language of the book is calm and to the point. It's small size makes it a quick read and the photography is excellent.

Not all the stories are easy on the conscience such as the story of Sereant Paul Ray Smith who earned the Congressional Medal of Honor by saving dozens of his fellow soldiers by giving his own life. The miraculous story of Sergeant "C" who was shot at point blank range by an Iraqi Solider and thought that the gun had misfired is incredible. Sergeant "C" felt lightheaded and noticed that he had a missing tooth, so he went to get some first aid, it was then discovered that he had a bullet lodged where his tooth had been. Another story includes a Soldier's last letter home saying that he had no regrets and that his belief in the importance of freedom is what motivated him.

All of the stories in American Heroes have a common sense of purpose. What is most interesting and inspirational about the book are the quotes, excerpts, and biblical passages that many soldiers carry with them as shields of strength. One quote in American Heroes is by General George S. Patton it says, "Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men. It is the spirit of the men who follow and of the man who leads that gains the victory." These kinds of quotes are what make the book so inspirational. American Heroes would make a perfect gift for the new recruit.

Great perspective  Dec 17, 2006
Reviewed by Steve Wilkins for Reader Views (12/06)

As a former naval officer, I was both honored and skeptical when I learned of the opportunity to review Stephen Mansfield's book about tales of American heroes fighting on the front lines. As an American and prior service member myself, I am distinctly aware of the dedication and courage our men and women in uniform have for ensuring the national security of our country. Out of this dedication and courage, however, sacrifice is borne. For the most part, sacrifice comes in the form of sweat, long days with little sleep, and months at a time away from family, friends and all that is familiar. Other times it can come in the form of lost blood and for that I am honored to review this book. My skepticism on the other hand is merely a function of my discomfort with the label of "hero." Service men and women by their very nature do not think they are anything special and certainly do not look at themselves as heroes. They see themselves simply as people who do their job day in and day out and do it well. They are a proud bunch, but not arrogant. I was skeptical because I thought the book would tell the tale of "heroes" on the front line simply doing their job.

I was wrong.

Mansfield's book is more like an essay in a hardcover wrapper. It is short, capable of being read in less than an hour, even for a slow reader such as me. The book will draw you in and inspire you to be a better person. Like the book, "Twenty-five Yards of War" by Ronald J. Drez, "American Heroes" describes in a shorter format what it must be like for ordinary men and women to be faced with the unthinkable during combat. Mansfield has a gift of taking raw facts and turning them into a beautiful story in easy to read prose. So often people get caught up in day to day activities that they forget their life could be far worse than they ever imagined. This book provides perspective and should be read by every American. It deserves to be read.

well written  Jul 23, 2006
This book, though small, covers all phases of the lives of the men and women who serve this nation on the battlefield. I believe it to be a very good read, especially for people who don't have someone serving. They can see what military families go through day to day. Since my husband and son are in this book, it deserves to be mentioned too that another one is coming out in Oct. call American Mourning. It gives the full account on their story. Jan
