More About Stan Nussbaum

Register your artisan biography and upload your photo! Dr. Stan Nussbaum has been involved in cultural and religious research and training since 1977. Besides living in Lesotho (southern Africa) and England for seven years each, he has taught in many countries such as India, Korea, Malaysia, Nigeria, Uganda, Lithuania, Egypt, and Peru. He has long held a special interest in proverbs as windows into a culture. He initiated and coordinated the African Proverbs Project, a four year pan-African project funded by a research grant from The Pew Charitable Trusts. Americans have a proverb, "Will it play in Peoria?" It means, "Will ordinary Americans like it?" Peoria is a small city in central Illinois, which is in the Midwest, and its people are considered typical of Americans. The author grew up seven miles from Peoria in the small town of Morton, where he returned in 2006 to take care of aging parents. He and his wife Lorri have two children and four grand-children, including the two to whom this book is dedicated.

Successful Cross-Cultural Communication Begins by Understadning Your Own Culture  Sep 23, 2009
One of the greatest weaknesses in intercultural education is the failure to learn about one's own culture. Nearly all of the educational effort is centered on learning about cultural "lenses" and how those lenses are reflected in other cultures. Perhaps one of the most important and necessary skills for living in another culture and working in a multicultural society is learning about the characteristics of one's own culture. Stan Nussbaum calls this being aware of one's "cultural baggage," which can be a hindrance to successfully crossing cultures.

Nussbaum creates a list of the "10 Commandments" of U.S. culture using idioms and proverbs from the dominant U.S. culture. He then uses stories, cartoons, and hundreds of other idioms/sayings to reinforce those top ten cultural values. He also includes exercises for discussion and practice. The book reads easily as it is written for a wide audience, including internationals and immigrants so they might better understand the dominant U.S. culture.
