From The Book Jacket
"American Christmas Classics" focuses on the American contribution to the perennially popular genre known as Christmas music. It provides a fresh historical perspective about the development of the American carol and holiday songs. The contribution of the United States to the international Christmas music repertoire only began, for most part, in the mid-19th century as a result of the older Puritan tradition that had shunned the celebration of Christmas, and some of this feeling lingered until Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" appeared in 1843. Suddenly a plethora of fine songs emerged, including "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear", "Jingle Bells", and "We Three Kings of Orient Are". Another source of American carols were folk carols with African-American and rural roots, some of the latter which were discovered in the early 20th century. By the 1920s and 1930s the carol had moved out of the church and onto the airwaves. One of the fascinating, and perhaps predictable, trends in Christmas music is the increasingly secular nature of the songs. From 1940 to 1954, sixteen well-known Christmas songs in this compilation were written. Beginning with "White Christmas", they were representative of American popular culture and the Sentiments of that era. Although the movement toward more secular song composition continued for the balance of the 20th century, these original seasonal songs still convey a sense of genuine warmth and sweet sentimentality that have made them cherished holiday standards. As the second volume of a planned series of book/audio products titled "THE MILLENNIA COLLECTION: Glorious Christmas Music, Songs, and Carols," a landmark collection highly acclaimed by William E. Studwell, an international expert on this Christmas phenomenon, "American Christmas" Carols is specially packaged and offers American consumers of Christmas music a rich composite to satisfy their holiday needs.SPECIAL FEATURES: * nostalgic illustrations from some of America's finest periodicals of the 20th century, as well as beautiful fine art from reputable American museums and libraries, relating to Christmas themes and music * captivating information, some of it ground-breaking, and a whole new perspective about the heritage of American Christmas music * gold star audio recordings, including originals by famous soloists and choirs This exciting blend of information, carol and song lyrics, illustrations and audio recordings distinguishes American Christmas Classics, as well as "THE MILLENNIA COLLECTION: Glorious Christmas Music, Songs, and Carols," from other Christmas music collections. The bar has been purposely raised to provide readers with an attractive and classic music product, one they can continue to explore and enjoy each Christmas season for generations to come. Like other titles in the series, it effectively combines historical analysis, song lyrics, illustrations from the time period when each song was composed, and a notable recorded interpretation of each work. In short, no library or private collection concerned with holiday customs and music is complete without this title!" - Frank Hoffmann, Professor, Sam Houston State University
