Item Description...
This engaging narrative by best-selling author Dr. William J. Bennett slices through the cobwebs of time, memory, and prevailing cynicism to reinvigorate America with an informed patriotism.

Publishers Description
The second volume of Bennett's overview of U.S. history begins with the events leading up to WWI, tracing the progress of the U.S. through the end of Reagan's presidency. Bennett (The Book of Virtues) has a long history of government service-he was Secretary of Education under Ronald Reagan and Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy under George H.W. Bush-and the overall tone of the book reflects the deep respect he holds for America's leaders, history and institutions. Bennett is a leading figure in the neoconservative movement, so his interpretation of America's last 90 years is informed by that perspective. But while he wears both his patriotism and politics on his sleeve, Bennett avoids flag-waving or talk-radio-style generalizations. This is a breezy, heartfelt survey, written with the average listener in mind, that will appeal broadly to those looking for an America-friendly introduction to 20th century U.S. history.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
American History Part 1  Oct 24, 2008
As a junior undergraduate student majoring in History, I adored Dr. Bennet's book. What he proves that many historians can not seem to get right is that History is essentially a long narrative. Dr. Bennett brilliantly lays out the book in a structure that consumes the reader from chapter to chapter while containing various levels of knowledge. I have read this Volume twice and I see a possible third in the future. Why? Because what the textbooks and history professors fail to do, Dr. Bennett so cleverly fills the void. Better yet, there is no real bias in this Volume in regards to politics and he is helpful on guiding the reader to both views of politics if such a scenario existed.
A Disappointment  Sep 3, 2008
Although I love William Bennett, I had a hard time with this book. The writing is not very good at all. If you are looking for a book on American History that is fair and balanced, I recommend Paul Johnson's A History of the American People. It is beautifully written and very comprehensive.
Okay overview of American history  Aug 16, 2008
This is a good book for anyone who either has little grasp of the main points of US history from 1492 to 1914, or for someone who's forgotten all that high school US history. But I thought it spent too much time on trivial facts, such as electoral and popular vote results of each and every presidential election, at the expense of facts that might have been more relevant and enlightening -- for example, a good explanation of the electoral college and why it was and still is in use. Similarly, the book mentions the votes and veto of the Chinese Exclusion Act, but completely neglects to explain what the Act was (I know all about it, but I bet a lot of readers are not familiar with it).

So definitely worth a read, but with the caveat that it might leave the reader wanting a more thorough history of the US.
Very good.  Jun 6, 2008
I think all Americans should know how our great nation came to be, and what is happening now to threaten it's sovereignty and constitution. Since 911, we have been to willing to give up our freedom and prosperity in hopes of some security. Now our economy, our republic, the balance of power between national govt. branches, and our constitutional liberties and values are being rapidly eroded in the name of the "war on terror". I highly recommend Ron Paul's book, Revolution: A Manifesto. We must set a good example for the rest of the world by following our constitution, not interfere with the internal affairs of other nations, such as imposing sanctions, puppet governments, much less threaten massive war on those who "might" have weapons of mass destruction!
Great trip thru the history of our country  Apr 5, 2008
Bennett has done an outstanding job of documenting the often chaotic, confusing story of the founding and development of our country in a very easy to read and comprehend book. It's become one of my permanent references on US history.
