Item Description...
Thompson and a team of contributors--Beverly Thompson, Harvey K. Newman, and Jim Watkins--explore the nature of power and the challenges it poses to pastoral ministry. By using the metaphor "alligators in the swamp," they present and explore the nature of power from diverse yet complimentary perspectives such as: Power and self (attire) Power and culture in church and community (map/compass) Power and community decision-making (craft) Power and public advocacy (gear) By examining such models, pastors will increase their ability to use power fittingly and effectively. To assist with understanding the alligator metaphor, line drawings accompany each chapter.

Not So Much What I Was Looking For  Aug 13, 2009
At first appearances, this book looks highly interesting. The book deals with the issue of power, ministry, and leadership within a congregation. The book was to deal with the issue of control within the framework of a church. The issues of power are at the root of a lot of conflict. People fight over who has the power in the church. If people perceive that they are losing influence or power, these people will fight. This dynamic happens in churches all over America. New people might be coming in and the established members feel threatened. The power seems to address some of these issues, but it is not very clear. It seems that the book was a dissertation that never made it into material that people could understand. The book also moves away from the church context into the area of community politics. I found the book difficult to read and mostly not understandable. Maybe it is that I do not have a lot of background on this topic so the book was over my head, but mostly I did not found the material helpful. The book also does not seem concise and it could have been stated, the core principles in a quicker and clearer way.
