More About Bunyan John

John Bunyan John Bunyan (1628 1688) was born in Elstow, England, and his life was spared twice in his early years, something he believed God had done for a special purpose.

John Bunyan was an English Christian writer and preacher who is best known for his allegorical novel The Pilgrim' s Progress, published in 1678. Bunyan' s faith was profoundly influenced by two books owned by his wife: Arthur Dent's Plain Man's Pathway to Heaven and Lewis Bayly's Practice of Piety, and he turned to preaching following the death of his guide and mentor, John Gifford.

In November 1660, when Bunyan arrived to preach in the little town of Lower Samsell, he was informed that a warrant had been issued for his arrest. Unwilling to denounce his Christian faith and his calling to the ministry, he was imprisoned for twelve years. Among the many writings he published during his imprisonment are The Holy City, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, and the most famous, The Pilgrim's Progress.

After his release, he continued to write and publish stirring works that have endured through time. Among these classics are The Holy War, Visions of Heaven and Hell, and Journey to Hell: The Life and Death of Mr. Badman.

Bunyan on God's Immense Love  Mar 24, 2010
"Nu hony in a B" -- is the way John Bunyan rearranged the letters of his name in order to describe" the effect of God's sovereign grace upon his life. Herein Bunyan, author of the grand classic "Pilgrims Progress," delivers a stirring and cogent treatise on Ephesians 3:18-19. His exposition centers on God's love for His people as he calls believers to embrace God's immense love and glorify God in the process.

The author states: "One leak will sink a ship: and one sin will destroy a sinner."

Chapters include:
- The Breadth of God's Love
- The Length of God's Love
- The Depth of God's Love
- The Height of God's Love
- Praying for Ability
- Praying for Knowledge
- As well as a good deal additional engaging exposition.

Some Bunyan quotes: "He who runs from God in the morning will scarcely find him the rest of the day"
And: "Sin is the dare of God's justice, the rape of His mercy, the jeer of His patience, the slight of His power, and the contempt of His love"
He adds "No child of God sins to that degree as to make himself incapable of forgiveness."

[That you] may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height-- to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God (Ephesians 3:18-19).

Bunyan muses: "That the eternal word, for the salvation of sinners, should come down from heaven and be made flesh, is an act of such condensation, a discovery of such love, that can never be completely found out" (p. 89).

This volume is a potent yet a smooth read and is great for devotions.
