Item Description...
Alfred Delp (1907-1945) was a German Jesuit condemned to death by the Nazis for anti-Hitler activities. While awaiting execution Delp composed this series of meditations on Advent, the Lord's Prayer, the tasks of the future, the meaning of happiness, and other spiritual themes. Written on the edge of eternity, Delp's reflections continue to bear a special power and poignancy. His words snow the ongoing relevance of the Gospel in an age of idolatrous power and capricious violence.

Publishers Description
Classic reflections on gospel wisdom from a modern martyr show the ongoing relevance of the gospel in an age of idolatrous power and capricious violence.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Several collections of the writings of Jesuit Priest the Reverend Father Alfred Delp have emerged very recently, as well as biographic reflections upon his life and martyrdom which have so much to tell us about living truly and completely our Catholic Faith in our current critical times of war and religious persecution, including Advent of the Heart: Seasonal Sermons And Prison Writings 1941-1944, With Bound Hands: A Jesuit in Nazi Germany : The Life and Selected Prison Letters of Alfred Delp and Hitler & the Jesuits: three resisters & the price they paid.(Lothar Konig, Augustin Rosch, Alfred Delp) : An article from: Commonweal, as well as the originals such as Gesammelte Schriften and Begegnung mit Alfred Delp. Nevertheless we do well to come to know the profound pacifist and Catholic spirituality of this great martyr and certainly saint of our Catholic Faith through this present offering from the courageous Catholic Publishing House Orbis Books as part of its Modern Spiritual Masters Series, which also includes studies of Deitrich Bonhoeffer (fellow martyr in Faith-filled resitance to the Nazis), Simone Weil (ditto), Father Henri Nouwen, fellow Jesuit the Reverend and learned Father Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Father Charles de Foucauld (a further modern martyr for our Faith), His Holiness the Reverend Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero (martyred at the Offertory of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass by US directed paramilitary forces for pleading for peace and justice), Ste. Therese of Lisieux, pacifist Thich Nhat Hanh, Edith Stein, pacifist Mohandas Gandhi, pacifist priest Thomas Merton, and several others who in the past century have dedicated their lives to peace, to justice, to our Faith.

This present excellent collection serves therefore as a generous orientation to the theology of peace of Father DElp, with an excellent and new biographical introduction by Alan C. Mitchell, itself a theological treatise worthy of our thoughts and prayers as it places the meaning of Father Delp within our present situation in a great hermeneutical tour de force, and the original ample introduction by Father Thomas Merton to this representative collection of correspondence as published in its first English translation.

Other duties call me now; otherwise I would add citations and references, but must rush to service the poor and abandoned, as we are commanded and compelled. I add such citations not only to demonstrate to the unbelievers that I do in fact own and read this book, but also to share with you from its rich feast of nourishing spiritual sustenance. I wish the plays written by Father Delp were as easily accessible as this present text, and I urge you to come to know him here as certain member of our Communion of Saints and as strength for our present times in which we as well are called to stand courageously and without fear as witnesses for the Prince of Peace, Our Lord Jesus Christ.
A Classic!  Apr 17, 2006
I spent some of Good Friday reading what traditionally was called The Prison Meditations of Father Delp (a priest executed by the Nazi's in World War II), this is a spiritual treasure that thanks to Orbis press is available in a modern format as part of their Modern Spiritual Masters Series!
