Cute!  Apr 15, 2008
First a note, because a lot of people are reporting confusion: there are different editions of this book, one using the English crochet terms and one using the US terms. The version I have uses US notation and has ISBN 1-85585-993-9. If you look in the stitch explanation at the front and it lists both slip stitch and single crochet separately, you have the US version.

Anyway, the patterns are terribly cute, and are arranged in color groups. Most could be done by a beginner but are not so basic as to be boring to an experienced crocheter. The beautiful "Icelandic Jacket" is all done in one piece (no sewing seams!) and the blues blanket would work for any age. If you are looking for projects that don't just use pink and blue (though you'll find those too), this is a great book to try.
Doesn't look "homemade"  Sep 27, 2007
Ilove finding books with patterns that don't scream "homemade" that make people ask if you would like to sell it. This book contains patterns that are just like that. I wish that they had instructions for larger size in a couple of them. I can figure that out on my own. I also would suggest that yardages for yarn would be listed, it makes it easier to subsitute, esp when the yarn is not available in the states. Also you have to remember that a double crochet is a single in the states. Check the beginning instructions if you are not sure what patterns mean.
I recommend this book
Good book but it had me a bit lost  Jul 22, 2007
I would not consider myself a beginner, but this book had me so lost aht I felt like one. I was thrilled to get down to work while waiting for my next arrival. BUT, the stitches are not what i was taught. They called single stich, double and double treble, and so on. I have tried two of the projects from this book and both I have had to frog and start over a number of times. I have since put the book back onto the bookshelf and will look at it in a few more months.

The book really does have some very cute patterns. But becasue I know the American way of crochet it has me a little bit lost. This would be great for someone who is just learning as they do explain in the first few pages the basics of crochet and if you learn their way it will be easier for you to follow the patterns. I think my main problem is that it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks (not the the way they do it is new but they call diffrent stitiches diffrent names than what I learned).

Overall this is a great book. I am just hardheaded and really set in my ways.
A bit of a disappointment  Jun 4, 2007
The edition of this book I have seen is from 2002, published in North America, and uses American terms. The photos are indeed adorable. the colors used are not the typical pastels and the designs are clean and modern. the color combinations are inspiring. I feel the smock pictured on the this site page (on the cover of the softback book) is the best design in the book. However, it is made in Patons Baby pure Wool 3-ply, which is apparently not available in the US. Finding a substitute for this yarn has proved quite difficult for me. The directions call for a 2mm (steel size 4) hook, which is quite small; I mention that because some crocheters do not like to use such small sizes. The garment size ranges are quite limited; the smock is in sizes 0-5 months and 5-10 months. Another nice design is the Icelandic cardigan (in reality a fairly simple variation on a round-yoke design)--this is for size 6 months only.
Adorable Crochet for babies and toddlers  May 17, 2007
What I love most about this book is the contemporary styles so beautifully photographed, I have searched on line for a long time and all I could find were the "granny" style projects that young mothers would consider tacky. These projects are practical and trendy and inspire me to do do them. The book has a glossary that defines the terms that I didn't understand since the terminology is a bit different. Beautiful book!
