Item Description...
Overview
The Acts of the Apostles--or more in keeping with the author's intent, the Acts of the Ascended Lord--is part two of Luke's story of "all that Jesus began to do and teach." In it he recounts the expansion of the church as its witness spread from Jerusalem to all of Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth. While at least forty early church authors commented on Acts, the works of only three survive in their entirety--John Chrysostom's Homilies on the Acts of the Apostles, Bede the Venerable's Commentary on the Acts of the Apostles and a long Latin epic poem by Arator. In this volume, substantial selections from the first two of these appear with occasional excerpts from Arator alongside many excerpts from the fragments preserved in J. A. Cramer's Catena in Acta SS. Apostolorum. Among the latter we find selections from Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus, Gregory of Nyssa, Ephrem the Syrian, Didymus the Blind, Athanasius, Jerome, John Cassian, Augustine, Ambrose, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Theodoret of Cyr, Origen, Cyril of Jerusalem, Cyril of Alexandria, Cassiodorus and Hilary of Poitiers, some of which are here translated into English for the first time. As readers, we find these early authors transmit life to us because their faith brought them into living and experiential contact with the realities spoken of in the Sacred Text.

Publishers Description
Editor Francis Martin collects patristic comment on the text of Acts in this volume of the ACCS. Reviews - What do our customers think?
Not as good as the other volumes  Oct 18, 2009
Unlike many of the volumes in this series (I own the set, but have not extensively examined every volume), this one often seems to contradict the essential nature of the series, expressed in the General Editor's preface: "refrain from the temptation to fixate endlessly upon contemporary criticism." I have enjoyed the volumes in this series, but this one on Acts brought me up short. In nearly every pericope, the editor sees the need to inform me how modern commentators view this passage. Often the overview of modern commentary is longer than the summary of the following selections from the fathers, and sometimes he even rebukes the fathers a bit. E.g., "Our two patristic witnesses ... pay little attention to the historical sense of this passage." Sometimes the modern commentators are dispensed with and the editor speaks in his own voice as to what the passage was really meant to accomplish (by Luke), in contrast with things the fathers were interested in.

Overall, still very helpful but in a very different tone from the other volumes I've used.

Essential Reading for Every Christian  Apr 12, 2008
The early church fathers offer a rich wealth of thought and reflection on the text of the Scriptures.

This series has established itself as essential reading. It offers a manageable overview of the thought of the Early Church Fathers.

Of course, decisions about what to provide for readers is subjective, but the Ancient Christian Commentary offers an excellent roadmap into the world of thought of the fathers of the early church.
