Overview
Expert commentary on the writing long considered the church's first "history" Thoroughly grounded in traditional disciplines with particular attention to literary structure and the wider context of Hellenistic literature.

Publishers Description
The Acts of the Apostles joins the Gospel of Luke with the ministry of Paul. Renowned New Testament scholar Richard I. Pervo shows how this masterful storyteller worked his magic, drawing on first-century literary techniques of narration and characterization. Luke's literary skills did not prevent scribes from re-writing his masterwork, however, the textual tradition of Acts is among the most intriguing of the documents of the New Testament, and is a focus here. Elegantly written, Pervo's commentary provides a compelling interpretation of Acts in the context of Hellenistic literature and the emerging Christian movement, Readers will rediscover the "profit with delight" that was the ideal of ancient story-tellers.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Fascinating Commentary  Nov 17, 2009
Dr. Richard Pervo's commentary is absorbing, and quite entertaining. The text comes alive, as do the numerous problems the author of Acts faced and the often-ingenious ways he solved them. Dr. Pervo's bachground as a scholar of the ancient romance novel gives an added cultural dimension to what is a really excellent volume of a stand-out series. Highly recommended.

Oustanding Commentary on the Acts of Jesus' Apostles  May 24, 2009
As with many recent volumes in this series (for example, Luke vol. 1 by Bovon and 1 Enoch vol. 1 by Nicklesburg), Richard Pervo's Hermeneia's Commentary on Acts is an essential volume for those seeking a close reading of both text and context. Its usefulness as a commentary for scholars is obvious; its usefulness to preachers is limited only by the amount of time one may have to read and assimilate something of the linguistic and cultural detail provided.

As with other volumes in this series, the physical commentary itself may require table-top reading, as its oversized pages and often fine print (compared to other contemporary series such as Anchor Bible and Sacra Pagina) do not lend it to easy-chair reading. If detailed commentary on the original language and subsequent research is crucial to your work, you may want to look into Hermeneia's CD-ROM editions.
