Item Description...
Overview
The Book Of Acts is the story of the new Church, young in years but mature in faith and purpose. In this passage-by-passage study, MacArthur focuses on the powerful lessons the new Christians were learning---through the experience of Pentecost, Peter's sermon, and the persecution they faced---as they began to transform the world with the Gospel. MacArthur's trademark clarity, a bibliography, and Greek, Hebrew, and Scripture indexes make this an invaluable study tool for leaders and laypeople.

Publishers Description
These study guides, part of a set from noted Bible scholar, John MacArthur, take readers on a journey through biblical texts to discover what lies beneath the surface, focusing on meaning and context, and then reflecting on the explored passage or concept. With probing questions that guide the reader toward application, "The MacArthur Bible Studies" are invaluable tools for Bible students of all ages. The book of Acts is the first volume of church history. It records the story of the church from its explosive beginning on the Day of Pentecost to the imprisonment at Rome of its greatest missionary. During those three decades, the church expanded from a small group of Jewish believers gathered in Jerusalem to embrace thousands in dozens of congregations throughout the Roman world. Acts describes how the Spirit of God superintended, controlled, and empowered the expansion of the church. Although a work of history, not theology, Acts nevertheless emphasizes the doctrinal truths concerning salvation, the work and person of the Holy Spirit, and other theological issues. Join John MacArthur as he searches the pages of the book of Acts to uncover the intricacies of God's Word spoken to His people.

He later obtained his Masters of Divinity from Biola University's Talbot Theological Seminary, in La Mirada, California. He graduated with honors. From 1964 to 1966, he served as an associate pastor at Calvary Bible Church, in Burbank, California and, from 1966 to 1969, as a faculty representative for Talbot Theological Seminary. Then, in 1969, he became the third pastor in the then-short history of the nondenominational Grace Community Church of Sun Valley, California.

His daily radio program, Grace to You, which is now broadcast throughout much of the world, began as an audio recording ministry to provide cassettes of his sermons to listeners. They were first broadcast in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1977.

In 1985, MacArthur became the president of The Master's College (formerly Los Angeles Baptist College), an accredited, four-year, liberal arts Christian college; and, in 1986, he founded The Master's Seminary. MacArthur also received an honorary doctorate from Talbot Theological Seminary[ and an honorary doctorate from Grace Graduate School.

Nearly 43 years after beginning in the pulpit of Grace Community, MacArthur completed one his own life goals of preaching through the entire New Testament on June 5, 2011, at the end of his projected target window, stated the previous January, to finish "some time in the summer."[1] During the same interview, MacArthur projected he would complete his commentary series within another five years, some 35 years after beginning.

Invaluable Work on Acts  May 17, 2004
Like him or not, Dr. John MacArthur always preaches what he believes and never waters it down. His firm foundation in the Bible allows him to teach with authority (Matthew 7:28). MacArthur does so in his continuing commentaries on the New Testament with this volume on Acts 1-12.

MacArthur does deal with the hard issues. For example, he deals with the baptism with the Holy Spirit in Acts 2 and offers his view (a cessationist view with a view toward conversion-initation; see James Dunn's BAPTISM IN THE SPIRIT). He does deal with miracles and manifesation gifts where needed from his text. MacArthur will not write what is popular nor will he debate an issus not found in the text he is dealing with.

I do highly recommend this volume on the book of Acts as well as the companion second volume of Acts 13-28. Both offer useful outlines for teachers of Scripture and both give great evangelical commentary as well as historical, grammatical, and application from the powerful book of Acts.

Buy something else  Apr 22, 2002
I'm impressed by MacArthur's scholarship and commitment to the text. But, I think that he reads much into it. Instead of wrestling with some of the tough issues that creep up in the book of Acts, with which the church needs to struggle, he gives pat, comfortable answers (i.e., in regard to financial matters, the idea of physical healing, the gifts of the Spirit, etc.).

No, I don't have the answers on all of those issues, which is why a more honest struggle with them, in print, would be helpful. More helpful than just dismissing some very relevant issues.

Anyway, please, please do not take this as a personal "slam" on MacArthur and his ministry-- obviously, he's a very anointed leader. And, I would recommend some of his other commentaries (1 Corinthans, for example). I just was not impressed on this one, and, if you have a limited book budget, by another commentary on Acts.

(FYI... it is helpful, if you do have this one, to read it in tandem w/ C.Peter Wagner's commentary on Acts, which takes the polar-opposite stance on almost every issue MacArthur presents.)
