More About John Bunyan

John Bunyan John Bunyan (1628 1688) was born in Elstow, England, and his life was spared twice in his early years, something he believed God had done for a special purpose.

John Bunyan was an English Christian writer and preacher who is best known for his allegorical novel The Pilgrim' s Progress, published in 1678. Bunyan' s faith was profoundly influenced by two books owned by his wife: Arthur Dent's Plain Man's Pathway to Heaven and Lewis Bayly's Practice of Piety, and he turned to preaching following the death of his guide and mentor, John Gifford.

In November 1660, when Bunyan arrived to preach in the little town of Lower Samsell, he was informed that a warrant had been issued for his arrest. Unwilling to denounce his Christian faith and his calling to the ministry, he was imprisoned for twelve years. Among the many writings he published during his imprisonment are The Holy City, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, and the most famous, The Pilgrim's Progress.

After his release, he continued to write and publish stirring works that have endured through time. Among these classics are The Holy War, Visions of Heaven and Hell, and Journey to Hell: The Life and Death of Mr. Badman.

Does God Care About a Broken Heart?  Dec 21, 2006
There is a reason why John Bunyan remains as one of my favorite authors. In his writing entitled The Accepatable Sacrifice, he brings biblical truth to challenge spiritual smugness and comfort broken and despairing hearts. This exposition of Psalm 51 is truly magnificent. He shows the necessity of, and divine grace towards, a heart that is rightly broken. Concluding the book with a warning not to shun a heart breaking from God, Bunyan ends his treatise in classic Puritan style. High encouragement from the God of all hope.

Grace and peace,
--Jeffrey
