Item Description...
Overview
The Abingdon Old Testament Commentaries provide compact, critical commentaries on the books of the Old Testament for the use of theological students and pastors. The commentaries are also useful for upper-level college or university students and for those responsible for teaching in congregational settings. In addition to providing basic information and insights into the Old Testament writings, these commentaries exemplify the tasks and procedures of careful interpretation, all to assist students of the Old Testament in coming to an informed and critical engagement with the biblical texts themselves. The six books found at the close of the Minor Prophets (Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi) present distinctive understandings of God, humanity, and the future. This commentary engages those understandings, considers what the books may have meant in the past, and describes how they resonate with contemporary readers. With attention to issues of gender, violence, and inclusivity, O'Brien explores the ethical challenges of the books and asks how faithful readers can both acknowledge the problems these biblical books raise and appreciate their value for contemporary theological reflection.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
A little disappointing  Mar 24, 2005
I enjoy old testament studies, and used this book for research on the book of Haggai. O'Brien's book was somewhat helpful, but added little to the existing body of work on the subject. Further, some of her assertions seem to be misguided. For example, O'Brien states that the verb tenses indicate that the temple was built by the time this book was written, and that Haggai is a retrospective book rather than one of recorded prophecy. I have studied the Hebrew version of Haggai and cannot see how this conclusion could be arrived at.

Another comment made by O'Brien is about "the great stress that the book places on the prophetic credentials of Haggai" which is absurd. The book simply refers to Haggai as "Haggai the prophet" and no further introduction, background, or other material establishing his authority is present. Quite contrary to O'Brien, it seems that Haggai was well known and respected by the people of Judah.

This is not to say the book is without value. O'Brien has put together a decent study of the topics at hand. Haggai, being a small book, is often overlooked or glossed over by commentators and O'Brien has done a good job of treating all of the material with respect.

If one is looking for THE commentary on these books, keep looking. If, on the other hand, the reader is looking for another view on certain aspects of the books at hand, they may find what they are looking for with this volume.

Perhaps the other books have better insights and more complete information. Unfortunately my review is based only on my interaction with the material relevant to Haggai.
