Overview
A bright new voice shares a tender love story set in the rolling green fields of Ohio Amish country.

After the death of her husband, Hannah Brown is determined to make a new life with her sister?s family. But when she sells her farm in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and moves with her sheep to Ohio, the wool unexpectedly starts to fly. Her deacon brother?in?law finds just about everything about Hannah vexing. When his widower brother shows interest in the young and beautiful widow, the deacon turns to prayer for guidance.

Hannah thought she could never love again, until she meets the strong, gentle farmer. Unfortunately, Seth Miller?s only interest is in Hannah?s sheep. He is content in his bachelor state and slow to recognize his daughter?s need for a new mother. Yet God offers Seth the perfect solution to their problems if he could only open his heart again...and love.

More About Mary Ellis
Mary Ellis I grew up close to the eastern Ohio Amish community of Geauga County, where my parents often took me to farmers’ markets and woodworking fairs. My husband and I now live within the largest population of Amish in the country–a four-county area in central Ohio. We love to take weekend getaways to purchase farm produce and other goodies, stay with Amish families in bed and breakfasts, attend country auctions and enjoy the simpler way of life. This is my first series of novels set in the Amish community.

A Lightening of the Heart with a charming simple story  Feb 18, 2010
Another wonderful Amish story to add to the many, many, many Amish novels that I have read. This is book 1 in Mary Ellis' Amish series, The Miller Family series, and I am so glad that I had the chance to review this tender story of love, forgiveness, family and heartache.

When I think of the Amish, I automatically think of the easy life they have, but in reality, they have struggles too. Many of the same struggles that we Englishers often have, and one of them being the death of a husband or a wife. In A Widow's Hope, that is exactly what Hannah is dealing with: the death of her husband, and the hope to love again. When another Amish widower enters the picture, it is a story that will make you laugh, cry and settle right in with all the wonderful characters.

I give this book a 5 star rating and high recommendations. I am looking forward to reading and reviewing book 2 in this series, Never Far From Home. If you like Amish and you love God, grab a copy of this book by a wonderfully talented author and experience a lightening of the heart through this simple easy read of Amish life.

Charming and gentle  Oct 24, 2009
Life is difficult for a young widow like Hannah Brown. Although she lives near her parents and a dear brother she is lonely for her husband Adam, and lonely for the child they never had together. She focuses on their farm and her beloved herd of sheep but she faces hard choices. As a member of a Pennsylvania Amish community she feels she can not be an independent farmer, but must fill a more appropriate and expected role. She sells the farm to her brother and takes herself and her sheep to her sister Julia's farm home in Ohio. With four young children and debilitating arthritis, Julia needs her help and that is what a widowed sister does.

Hannah finds life hard in Ohio. Her brother-in-law is less than welcoming to her and downright hostile to her sheep. The work is onerous, the days are long, and friends are few, but Hannah perseveres and thrives.

This charmingly told gentle tale explores life in a contemporary Amish community. The families adhere to the old Plain traditions both in their relationships ("the man is the head of the house, and that is that"), as well as in the way the work is done. Most travel is by horse-drawn conveyances, although Hannah makes the long journey from Pennsylvania to Ohio by bus. There is no power in the houses but the modern world still plays a role in some areas. There is refrigeration if it is propane powered, and when Hannah and her niece begin to sell shawls woven from the hand-spun sheep's wool in an English (non Amish) knitting shop there is talk is of web-based marketing.

I do not usually read stories like this and set out on this book with some hesitation. Now I wonder why. It is a well-written story with the expected happy ending. While I shared Hannah's life I learned a great deal about an interesting group of people that I knew little of. I'll say it here that when the next book in the series comes out, you'll find me hoping for a rainy afternoon on the sofa.

I look forward to the next book in the series.  Sep 9, 2009
Hannah Brown was only married six years when her husband died. She sells everything except her sheep and moves to Ohio. Her sheep cause problems; and her brother in law doesn't want her there. Most disconcerting was Seth Miller, a handsome widower with a daughter. Seth isn't interested in a wife but he is interested in sheep. He slowly comes to realize his daughter needs a wife.

This is the first book in a new series. The "Amish Romance" books have become a whole new genre. I love it. A Window's Hope is well written. It's entertaining and the characters are delightful. When we think of the Amish we think of a simpler life and of people that love the Lord. Sometimes we think the Amish are perfect. It is interesting to see how author's can make them real by making the characters slightly flawed. This is a great read. I look forward to the next book in the series.
