Profound, Engaging and Utterly Deep; A Surprising Read  Jan 9, 2007
This book was simply stunning.

I knew going into it that the book would be challenging and would force me to stop and soak up everything as some friends had read it and also from the reviews it received, but I guess I just didn't expect that once I did start to really dive into the work that the level of truth and insight that Marking reveals would be so tangible and would so powerfully change my perspective.

This book sets the bar for looking at spiritual disciplines with a fresh perspective, not so much in newness of topic, but in execution and, above all, relentless examination of how these things accomplish the only goal we have for transformation: aiding us in entering the presence of God-- DAILY.

This book is not a quick read, by any means, but that is because there is so much there that you must read it sentence by sentence, thought by thought, which I believe was Marking's intent as an author to slow us down and show us just how much there is in spiritual growth.

Despite the depth and intensity, Marking's writing style is very conversational and you don't feel like he's berating you to change but that you are going along with him on a journey of investigation and self-introspection.

The chapters on faith, forgiveness and prayer were amazing: wow.

Simply, you must read this book.
Not for the casual Christian or faint of heart "believer" not ready to get real  Dec 13, 2006
I got a copy of this book and was utterly unprepared for the journey I was about to go on with the author. This book, from the very, very beginning with the poetic "Introduction," really struck a cord inside me that I identified with, just with the first few lines:

"There once was a man who lay in his bed and couldn't fall asleep at night.
No matter what he did, or thought in his head, nothing seemed quite right.
So as he thought and wondered what could possibly keep him awake,
His heart stilled and his mind silenced and he felt a gentle quake.

I want more.

And as his eyes opened wide his soul began to breathe,
A gentle whisper in his ear:
"I know what I heard with those simple three words,
But something's troubling me here.
However obvious those words may seem,
Their message isn't clearly defined.
Because I know, deep down in my soul...
The Voice that spoke wasn't mine."

I say I was unprepared for this book because I think we all feel a bit lacking or longing in regards to faith or belief and I really think people are scared of this reality and so many of us don't ever face it and don't actually ever really look into what can help us overcome mediocrity and help us get closer to God.

I think there are two reasons why people fear examining aspects of faith with a critical (examination usage of the word, not pessimistic dismissal) eye because they are afraid they'll have to change and they like doing what they want (nevermind the give up yourself for God and others part) or they are afraid that they will fail, which is where I was and continually am to a small degree.

That is why this book is not for a casual, if not shallow, Christian because this book takes you by the hand and says, "Let's find out how we can really pursue the presence of God, no matter the ramifications once we get there because there is where we'll find what we're looking for."

In addition, the book is not a top-layer read, unlike many other very popular books, like "The Purpose Driven Life," to be truthful. Marking has done an amazing job of infusing each page and chapter with a great amount of material and ideas to absorb, ponder and discuss. That is not to say that the book is slow or very difficult to process, it's just packed with stories and thoughts that don't just trickle off of you but really soak in.

The best part about this book is the very welcoming feel and tone throughout. I never felt like the book was "over my head" or that I was "an evil, sinner" for struggling to become more like Christ.

I think that is one of Marking's strongest gifts as a writer is that he does not alienate his reader for struggling with faith and selfish mistakes but says, "You can do this no matter the past or the problems of the present. Remember, with God all things are possible." In this regard, it is very easy to see why Marking is compared to C.S. Lewis because, much like Lewis's "The Problem of Pain," Marking accepts the fact that everyone struggles but further states that every struggle inherently holds an opportunity for spiritual growth and development.

The book is more like a collection of messages about growing closer to God, with issues like "faith, prayer, forgiveness, love, discipleship, worship, etc" instead of an on-going theme or continuous sermon.

All I can do is recommend this book to someone who really wants to grow beyond attending church and casual conversation. This book is a tool for the person who wants to be "equipped" to seek the presence of God and to let Christ help you love and serve others with grace, respect and charity.
An Instant Classic for This Generation   Dec 7, 2006
I was recommended this book by a friend that I respect and admire because of her intelligence and the genuine depth of her faith. She told me that this book would become a classic for our generation and so I picked it up and read it and...could not agree more.

Unlike so many books out there "AVIC" not only challenges you but actually enables you to take a good long, honest look as to what you really believe and why; but more importantly, it then asks what are you actually doing about it. I couldn't help but ask myself "Is my life a any different in terms of what I say I believe, is my life one based on loving others through actions and loving God with sincere devotion and not superficial appearances or empty words.

I think the best part is that this book does not condemn people who struggle with faith but says that not only is uncertainty normal in the ups and downs of life but that it is essential to genuine growth and an authentic faith. In my opinion, an unquestioning belief is a shallow one because you never really wrestle with truth or with conflict and only take things at face value, which means you're never really embracing or denying anything. Plus, even the Bible says a "wise man questions everything but a fool believes everything he is told." And there is a difference between honest questions and belligerent disbelief, which I think J.G. Marking does a good job distinguishing and being real and transparent as an author (this may be why the book is so powerful because you feel such a strong bond with the author as a person and not a "preacher").

I highly recommend this book and agree with some of the other reviewers because this book can only help anyone who has questions about the Christian faith and anyone who seems to be stuck in a spiritual standstill.

Much like Dallas Willard's "The Divine Conspiracy" and C.S. Lewis's "The Four Loves," J.G. Marking has the amazing ability to examine a subject or topic and reveal entirely new depths and insights just beneath the surface.

One of the best surprises of the year!
One of the most intense and challenging books I've ever read!  Mar 25, 2006
This book definitely invites and thus makes you ask yourself a lot of questions about what you believe, what you live for from day to day and what one thing defines your life.

I absolutely loved the challenge this book prompts within my heart and soul as I, too often, just float through my life without considering or contemplating what I'm living for.

This book can only help you discover what and why you believe and how you can live a more fulfilling and genuine life.

Much like C.S. Lewis's "Mere Christianity" and Richard Foster's "Celebration of Discipline," I really believe J.G. Marking's "A Voice Is Calling" will be the beginning and possibly the landmark work of a young, up-and-coming writer for this century. Easily, one of the most intense and encouraging, yet insightful and motivating books I've ever read!

This book, by forcing me (and probably anyone who reads it) to examine my heart and soul, will help anyone live better to others and themselves!
Fantastic, Well-written, deeply moving!  Jan 20, 2006
This book is so well-written and so insightful that I can not believe a 22 year old wrote it. This book is unbelievably motivational and inspirational! I got the book and loved the book so much that I ordered 40 more directly from the author for my friends and family!

I utterly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys inspirational books or anyone who wants to read a critical analysis of the messages of Christ and what that means for people who want to profes belief in Christ.

Well-written, thought-provoking and above all else, truly inspiring!
