More About Eve Bunting & Diane De Groat

Eve Bunting The author of more than 200 books for young readers, Eve Bunting was born in the small village of Maghera in Northern Ireland. In 1958, she emigrated to the United States, where she has lived ever since, raising three children and — more recently — welcoming four grandchildren. Bunting began writing after moving to California, where she enrolled in a community college creative writing course. Her first published story, The Two Giants, was a retelling of a folktale she knew from her childhood. “I thought everybody in the world knew that story, and when I found they didn't — well, I thought they should.”

Bunting's interest in just about everything, and her confidence in wanting to share her thoughts and experiences with children, has led to her incredible career as the creator of a wide variety of books. She has written picture books, novels, and even some nonfiction. She never shies away from addressing difficult issues, including racial prejudice, death, troubled families, and war; at the same time, her work is infused with hope and beauty.

Her numerous awards and honors include the Golden Kite Award from the Society of Children's Book Writers, the PEN Los Angeles Center Literary Award for Special Achievement in Children's Literature, and the Edgar, given by the Mystery Writers of America.

When Bunting isn't writing, she enjoys reading and playing golf. She lives in Pasadena, California, with her husband.

Eve Bunting currently resides in Pasadena, in the state of California. Eve Bunting was born in 1928.

The Way Thanksgiving Ought To Be  Aug 8, 2007
I read this book years ago and now finally bought it. Now I can read it to my Preschool class this year. I think it is very sweet. Obviously the point is to make the reader think that Mr. Moose and his friends are getting a turkey to eat for Thanksgiving dinner. In actuality they insist the turkey come with them because Mr. Moose promised his wife a turkey for Thanksgiving ("Like everyone else"---so sad it's the norm). Happily the turkey discovers he's a guest for a vegan dinner rather than the maincourse! It's great book to teach compassion for animals and to encourage both out-of-the-box thinking and a meat free diet! Save a turkey this year, eat veggies instead! Adopt a turkey and save a life. You don't need all those added hormones in your body anyway.
Do not buy this book  Dec 4, 2005
A really, really bad story. A turkey is chased out of his home and hunted down through the woods. Here is a sample: "Turkey's legs bent in the middle as he fell. Mr.Moose put a booted hoof on his head and smiled..."I hope you don't have other plans for Thanksgiving, Turkey...My wife won't mind that you're too fat". The Turkey is than dragged back to Moose's house, where...SURPRISE!!, it turnes out he is a guest, not dinner. Is that supposed to be heartwarming?!
My four year old daughter who loves books, had a strange look on her face when I read this book to her (once), and then asked to please not read it to her again!! I won't. It went straight to the recycling bin.
Ms. Wirey's Class Book Review  Dec 1, 2001
This book is about Thanksgiving. We all thought that this book was really funny. We learned that having friends is good. Our class learned some new words. The book told us what happens at Thanksgiving. Everyone one should read this good book.
This delightful book evokes the true spirit of Thanksgiving!  Oct 31, 2001
When selecting books for our children, I try to pick stories that will hold their attention, provide an important message, and involve animals and/or nature. Eve Bunting’s book A Turkey For Thanksgiving has all of these criteria - and more! It is also a good book for children who are vegetarians or vegans.
In A Turkey For Thanksgiving Mrs. Moose is preparing a Thanksgiving dinner for her and Mr. Moose’s animal friends. However, this year she has decided that she wants a turkey for dinner so Mr. Moose, joined by his friends, sets off to find one. Eventually a turkey is found by the river and brought back for dinner. The terrified turkey is delighted, and relieved, to learn that he isn’t the main course, but a guest at this vegetarian feast! This delightful book evokes the true spirit of Thanksgiving. –Reviewed by Glenn Perrett
A surprising and heart-warming end!  Oct 22, 2001
Mr. Moose wants to make his wife happy by finding her a turkey for their Thanksgiving dinner. All the guests join in to look for the bird. The poor turkey is so afraid that he is reluctent to go with them. He (and we readers) find out in the end that they don't want him to be ON the table. Instead they want him to be AT the table to celebrate the holiday with them together.
I like this book because its surprising and heart-warming ending. When I was told that TURKEY is a symbol of Thanksgiving, I used to think "Of course, turkey is the main dish in our Thanksgiving dinner". Now I have discovered the new meaning of Thanksgiving.
