Item Description...
From 1964 till his retirement in 1993 Harry Wardlaw was professor first in systematc theoogy then philosophical theology at Ormond College in Melbourne, Australia. This period saw the incorporation of the then Presbyterian Hall into the ecumenical United Faculty of Theology in 1969 and then in 1977 the union of the Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregationalist Churches to form the Uniting Church of Australia. Harry was a theological guide to both these unions, as well as a playfully serious mentor to several generations of theological students, Anglican and Roman Catholic as well as Presbyterian and later Uniting Church members. He was noted for a teaching style in which thought became embodied in gesture and any object lying to hand was a potential teaching aid; for his impish sense of humour; and for the intensity of focused attention he gave to any question or idea put to him. The present collection of articles by appreciative friends, former students and colleagues both in Australia and overseas, was presented to Harry on his 77th birthday.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Written with scholarly precision  Jul 9, 2007
Edited by Philosophy of Religion instructor Ian Weeks and Anglican priest Duncan Reid, A Thoughtful Life: Essays in Philosophical Theology is an anthology of articles written by a diversity learned friends, students, and colleagues of philosophical theology professor Harry Wardlaw, known for his openness and the intense focus and scrutiny he applied to any question presented to him. The essays include "On the Difficulty of Talking about God", "A Jewish Experience of Jesus", "In Defiance of Fig Leaves: A Tangential Reflection on the Sexuality Debate in the UCA", and many more. Written with scholarly precision, these essays combine thought-provoking insight with respectful tribute for Wardlaw's rigorous search for theological, philosophical, and spiritual truth. "I vividly recall Harry Wardlaw posing to me the question, 'What is wrong with me when I talk about God?' He was not suggesting that 'God-talk,' as it came to be short-handedly referred to, was some sort of symptom of a pathological state, but rather to the general absurdity of an attempt to talk sense about so great a mystery." Highly recommended.
