Item Description...
"To Bayer the death of Christendom and the fall from power of the church represent the opportunity for the church to rediscover and return to its original mission and ministry, one which it largely abandoned by its alliance with political power and authority. This is a challenging book, one which it would profit all church planters and diocesan growth strategists to read, mark, and learn."

Reviews - What do our customers think?
When the ark sinks, what then?  Sep 26, 2007
"A Resurrected Church" by Charles Bayer (Chalice Press, St. Louis, MO 2001) Reviewed by David Barstow

Subtitled "Christianity after the Death of Christendom," this is a powerful and insightful analysis of both the problems and the potential of contemporary Christianity.

Exploring the provocative subject, "the death of Christendom," Bayer states that Christendom "assumed that the Christian faith, whether evidenced by a state church or not, is recognized as the dominant religious and cultural force."

He then goes on to clearly demonstrate that this is no longer the case in contemporary culture. He notes that the response of many churches to this situation is panic. "If the ark is leaking badly, our effort must be put into frantic bailing and patching."

It is here that Bayer is most forceful in pointing out that such a response will not work--the ark is sinking...period.

The heart of the book is an exploration of what can be done in this situation. Bayer feels that things are not hopeless; indeed, he finds grounds for measured optimism.

The ark is gone, but it is possible to make many small boats from the wreckage; or, to use the Biblical image, Christians are called to be the leaven, not the lump.

One can catch a sense of Bayer's passion for this role for the church is the following quotation:

"The post-Christendom church is radical! It subverts and seeks to dramatically alter the world. But in the marvelous alchemy of God, its weapons are justice, peace, and inclusion. It calls the world to reconciliation by serving the world."

It does this, not by calling attention to itself, but by faithfully serving those in need: pregnant women without support, abused children, AIDS patients and their families, school drop-outs and the mentally limited.

The list goes on, but it always focuses on those marginalized by society, those who are not included among the rich and famous.

This book is a Call to Arms and is well worth reading by anyone interested in the revitalization of contemporary Christianity. Strongly recommended.
