Not for everyone  Nov 14, 2006
I am the pastor of a church and was hoping to find a book that would help people read the Bible who were not part of a faith community. Since the Bible is no longer used as a text in our schools, many people are completely unaware of what it says or how to read it. The author begins by explaining the organization of the books of the Bible. I know from my own teaching of scripture that is an important step.

However, I am not sure that what he says he set out to do is even possible. To try to say that we are going to look at the Bible without looking through the lens of our traditions and thus our religion is problematic at best. As an example, Mr. Gantt attributes the first five books of the Bible to Moses. That is a traditional teaching and not found in scripture itself. That claim is a religious claim. For some within Christianity and Judaism it is an essential truth claim. To others it is a laughable bit of legend. So, no matter which an author chooses, he has made a religious and not a Biblical claim. Then, of course, if he addresses it at any length, then he loses his beginning readers who throw up their hands and say, "I knew this was too hard!"

I cannot recommend this book because I read the Bible in a very different way from Mr. Gantt. My tradition has always believed that the Bible needs to be taught as well as read. As the Ethiopian eunuch replied to Philip's question, "Do you understand what you are reading?", "How can I unless someone guides me." Acts 8:30, 31

No matter how intellectually and spiritually honest we try to be, we cannot lead and guide outside of the traditions we know and walk in. Mr. Gantt has written a book that leads seekers to read the Bible, but in a very particular way. He can do no other.
I like this book a lot!  May 19, 1999
There have been more than a few occasions when I decided that I wanted (needed) to read the Bible. So I would start reading, only to get bogged down after a few days or weeks, soon quitting. This book has been such a help! Some of the information is obvious (the Bible is ancient), yet the author coveys it in a meaningful way (therefore, it is good to read it more slowly than we would read a modern novel). (Those are not quotes, but paraphrases.) This book gives: practical information for navigating through the Bible, explains the similarities and differences of the 66 books of the Bible (there is a reason the books are in that particular order!), and gives an overview of each book of the Bible in easy to understand, conversational style. I'm almost finished with this book and looking forward to starting the Bible!
