Item Description...
Carol Kent has lived every parent's nightmare. After her only son was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, Carol's life took a permanent detour. She and her husband, Gene, have been adjusting ever since, moving to Florida to be near the prison, starting a new ministry for prison inmates and their families, and sharing the faithfulness of God with anyone who will listen.

A New Kind of Normal begins with the story of that horrible night when Carol and Gene learned their son had been arrested, but it doesn't end there. In fact, Carol knows what it means to live with an unthinkable circumstance that will never change-and to still make hope-filled choices. Through the eight chapters in this book, Carol will use their own story, the story of Mary mother of Jesus, and stories of women who have experienced their own "new normal" to share how God has led them to choose life, gratitude, vulnerability, involvement, forgiveness, trust, and action.

We can all learn something....  Feb 23, 2008
After reading all of the reviews, it's understandable the feelings that come out of a situation like this. I never got the impression that Carol and her huband expect to get a lighter sentence. I belive that they have come to terms with the situation itself. I think the problem comes in with the criminal justice system itself. I don't see child abusers and sex offenders getting a harsh enough sentence and they have LONG rap never seems fair, but either way I think we can all learn something from this situation, and I think that is her point in writing the book and speaking about it. Awful situtions happen in the world every day and coming to terms with it and helping others in similar situaions is the best we can do -with God's help - and I think that is the point of the book and she did that wonderfully.

This was a great book. There is so much that God can do if we look to him for guidance and control of all aspects of our lives.
Pride cometh before a fall??  Nov 19, 2007
Carol seems to expect sympathy that she must go to a prison to see her son, and that they have to spend holidays eating food from a vending machine with their son. At least they can still see their son, he is alive. From what I gather from her two books, she thinks that her son should be exempt from his life without parole prison sentence because: 1. her son was raised in a good christin home and 2. the military is to blame for training her son to stalk an unarmed citizen and shoot him in the back on a public sidewalk. Does she believe that her son is the only child on earth that was raised in a loving christian home, that he is the only prison inmate that has loving, christian parents that grieve the premeditated choices that their perfect sons have made? This is an outrageous insult to parents and family that also have to face a 'new normal'(spending holidays and Sundays at a grave) because of the actions of criminals like her son. Her son took the role of judge from the court system in Fl and determined that Douglas Miller Jr. was guilty and needed to die. His family did not get to say goodbye, Douglas did not get his day in court; his due process. Sounds very arrogant to me. Carol sounds like a mother that is in denial that her son could ever do wrong. Her son seems to agree. It is outrageous that she is asking for prayers and suppport to get her son an 'end date sentence'. No mention of praying for Douglas Miller's family and friends. She also had the nerve to mention that Douglas' father called Gene on Fathers Day...??? She is expecting sympathy from Douglas' family? Why didn't Gene or Carol or Jason call Douglas' father and offer their sympathy to him? I also noticed the change of attitude Carol professes in her 'approval' of her son's life mate(April) from the first book (When I Lay My Isaac Down) to this book ( A New Kind of Normal). After reading both books, I'd like to hear Douglas Miller Jr.s family's story. I'm not saying that it is not tragic that Jason Kent did what he did, nor the pain and grief that his parents feel. However, the point of all this is clear to me, but seemingly not to the Kent's: their son is alive and fortunate to have escaped the death sentence. Instead of praising God for that, and for still having a son to talk to, see and feel; the Kents seem to expect sympathy and support to have their son SET FREE? This rings of a self righteous, judgmental heart. One that perhaps (knowingly or not) looks down on the very people that buy her books and attend her seminars? Pride cometh before a fall?????
Excellent, insightful and encouraging  Oct 28, 2007
I appreciated the author's honesty in sharing her struggles. So many authors would not be able to share such a painful situation in the life of her family. It gives hope to all of us who struggle with family issues that it is OK to express our doubts and fears and find that God is big enough to handle our doubts and questions.
