Overview
During the fur-trapping era of the early 1800's, with two rambunctious young sons to raise, Marie Dorionr refuses to be left behind in St. Louis when her husband heads west. Faced with hostile landscapes, an untried expedition leader, and her volatile husband, Marie finds that the daring act she hoped would bind her family together may in the end tear them apart. History records that on the journey, Marie meets the famous Lewis and Clark interpreter, Sacagawea, who- like Marie- is pregnant, married to a mixed blood man of French Canadian and Indian descent, and raising a son in a white world. Together, the women forge a friendship that will strengthen and uphold Marie long after they part, even as she fights for her children's very survival. With courage and faith that can only be fueled by a mother's love, she endures. Her story reminds us that women are ground together in history, now and forever.

Publishers Description
Based on the life of Marie Dorion, the first mother to cross the Rocky Mountains and remain in the Northwest, "A Name of Her Own" is the fictionalized adventure account of a real woman's fight to settle in a new landscape, survive in a nation at war, protect her sons and raise them well and, despite an abusive, alcoholic husband, keep her marriage together.
With two rambunctious young sons to raise, Marie Dorion refuses to be left behind in St. Louis when her husband heads West with the Wilson Hunt Astoria expedition of 1811. Faced with hostile landscapes, an untried expedition leader, and her volatile husband, Marie finds that the daring act she hoped would bind her family together may in the end tear them apart.
On the journey, Marie meets up with the famous Lewis and Clark interpreter, Sacagawea. Both are Indian women married to mixed-blood men of French Canadian and Indian descent, both are pregnant, both traveled with expeditions led by white men, and both are raising sons in a white world.
Together, the women forge a friendship that will strengthen and uphold Marie long after they part, even as she faces the greatest crisis of her life, and as she fights for her family's very survival with the courage and gritty determination that can only be fueled by a mother's love.

In The Author's Own Words...

If you'd like more information about me, please come visit my website at www.jkbooks.com and click on my blog. My dog also has a blog and you can find out what it's like to be Bodacious Bo, too. A monthly newsletter called Story Sparks is my way of sharing books about authors I enjoy as well as commenting on life and love. You'll find out more about me than you probably ever wanted to know!

One item not listed on my lists of books is my selection included in an anthology called "Crazy Woman Creek: Women Rewrite the American West" published by Houghton Mifflin I also have a piece in Storytellers II, a book published a few years ago by Multnomah Press and a few short selections in Daily Guideposts of a few years back. My first novella, "The Courting Quilt" is part of a collection that made the New York Times bestsellers September 2011 in a collection called Log Cabin Christmas. The rest of my writing, as they say, is history. Or it was until my first contemporary came out this fall. Called Barcelona Calling, it's the story of a writer who loses her way as she seeks fulfillment thinking she'll find it with fame. It's a laugh out loud book according to reviewers. I hope you'll enjoy it.

Jane Kirkpatrick currently resides in Bend, in the state of Oregon. Jane Kirkpatrick was born in 1946.

  1. Change and Cherish Historical

A name of her Own  Oct 14, 2008

Living today in the land of Marie Dorion  Sep 27, 2008
I was drawn to this series as the name "Marie & Madame Dorion" are well know here in the Walla Walla Valley of Southeastern Washington. It is not only a wonderful story of a truly remarkable woman and what she endures from those she loves and mother nature...but to read what it might have been like 200 years ago in my own back yard is very interesting. Jane Kirkpatrick is a very gifted and insightful author. I appreciate the research she puts into her stories. I highly recommend this series.

A Name of her own  Jan 4, 2007
Jane Kirkpatrick is my favorite writer. If you have never read one of her books, you are in for a pleasant surprise. This book is as great as the others and I have all of them.

Not what I'd hoped it would be  Sep 6, 2006
After reading the "All Together In One Place", I was expecting a lot more from the Tender Ties series. It's not that they aren't particularly good, they're just not as good as the others of Jane Kirkpatrick's that I've read. The timelines are a little harder to follow because they sometimes skip ahead months and even years. Like I said, it's not that these aren't good books, they just aren't quite what I've come to expect from her.

UNFORGETABLE!!  Nov 11, 2005
This whole series was wonderful. This is my first experience with Jane Kirkpatrick and I intend to read more of her work. This is an unforgetable story of a remarkable woman and her family. You can't go wrong with this series.
