Item Description...
After being dumped, Gretchen Hanover decides to become a house flipper, buying houses and fixing them up to sell, but when the house that she buys has more problems than she anticipated, carpenter Noah Campbell steps in to help.

Publishers Description
Thirty-something Gretchen Hanover is stuck. Seeking solace from a broken heart, she traded her wedding plans for home improvement shows and ice cream--but she knows she can't live on Ben and Jerry's forever. She also knows that her enthusiastic Lab puppy has outgrown her tiny apartment.
The perfect patch for Gretchen's dilapidated plans? She'll become a first-time house-flipper. As ideas go, it's daring and genius. She'll take out a short-term loan, buy a fixer-upper, renovate it, resell it, and use the profit for an adorable house of her own. What could be easier?
But Gretchen's plans to flip quickly flop when the house turns out to be in worse shape than she expected. She is relying on her retired contractor-father, but he wants to draw in his carpenter friend Noah Campbell. And although Noah is handy with tools, Gretchen isn't so sure about the baggage he brings with him. Will she be able to loosen her grip on the tools when it seems Noah may be her only help?
A whimsical look at color swatches, mismatched curtain rods, and the building of relationships, "A Mile in My Flip-Flops "reminds us that it takes faith to renovate the heart, as well as the home.

More About Melody Carlson
Melody A Carlson I started writing "professionally" about twenty years ago. I quickly learned that I'm a fast writer and, as a result, I've published more than 200 books--with more than 6 million books sold. And it stuns me to write out those numbers today. How did that happen? I've been told I'm in the top twenty "most prolific authors" of all time. Although I'm not certain this is true, it does make me wonder--and I wonder how other authors (in previous generations) managed to write so many books without the use of a computer. Last year I won a Career Achievement Award from Romantic Times. But that doesn't mean I'm ready to retire. I have lots more books coming out and new ideas popping into my head all the time. I write from a studio right next to the house I share with my husband in Oregon. My dog Audrey goes to work with me every morning. I have to's a pretty good life...and I am grateful to God for every bit of it.

Surprising story  May 6, 2010
I liked this story a lot (Melody Carlson always has been a good writer!). This book came in good condition, but I thought that the price was a bit much.
Can You Flip Your Life Too?  Aug 31, 2009
If you are a fan of the HGTV channel, you will love this book. I myself have only watched a couple episodes of some of the shows, usually while I'm channel surfing. This book focuses on the art of house flipping, where a person buys a house usually in disarray, renovates it completely and then goes back and sells it to make a profit. Gretchen seems to make a rash decision to pursue a dream of becoming a house flipper and uses up most of her savings to buy a decrepit house. Unfortunately things don't go as smoothly as she had planned. Pretty much everything that could go wrong goes wrong. While it probably wouldn't have been amusing to Gretchen, reading about her adventures was enjoyable and a hoot at times. I learned A LOT about not only house flipping but also the basics of renovation and upkeep. It was pretty much like reading an episode of one of the HGTV shows.

Gretchen's initial reaction to Noah is, while understandable, a bit put offish. I didn't like how she assumed that just because he was divorced, that meant that he was bad at making commitments. She didn't know the situation yet she was wrongly blaming him. However once the two finally settle their differences, they have excellent chemistry that is really fun to watch. Even better is when Noah's ex-wife comes on the scene which throws everyone for a loop. Another part of the story I liked was Gretchen's relationship with her father. I enjoyed reading about the two of them and especially her willingness to have him be involved with her house flipping plans. It's good to read about a father -daughter relationship, when no mother is involved, that's managed to stay pleasant and close throughout the years.

If you're looking for a fun read to end the summer with, grab this book. It's lighthearted chick lit with a dose of learning about learning who the ultimate fixer-upper is. Melody Carlson's books have the power to take me from whatever I'm doing and draw me right into her books. Whether it's one of her YA books or her edgy adult fiction or like this book, fun chick lit I always know I'm going to be in for a good read.

Cute, cute, cute! I literally smiled my way through the last third of this book. If you like HGTV and home improvement television shows, this is your book. But even if you don't, you'll find "A Mile in my Flip-Flops" a fun read.

The story begins when thirty-two year old, recently jilted, Gretchen makes the bold move to become a "house flipper." She's watched people on TV do it, and is sure she can do it too! So with the help of her dad she purchases a fixer upper and gets to work. The book chronicles her journey to transform a dilapidated, crumbling house and turn it into a lovely family home. Gretchen's funny antics are silly--but not over the top.

And of course "A Mile in My Flip-Flops" has a love story too. Now I'm somewhat picky about my love stories, and frankly I'm repelled by anything too sappy or phony. But the romance in Carlson's book was really believable, appealing, and satisfying.

Overall, I very much enjoyed reading about the renovation of Gretchen Hanover's fixer-upper--but even more; I enjoyed reading about the renovation of Gretchen's life.
Rather sophomoric if you ask me...  Dec 6, 2008
The premise for the story was promising in that a thirty something, Gretchen Hanover, decides to flip a house in California. The love interest in the book, Noah, works on her house flip for 6 weeks, goes on 2 dates with Gretchen, kisses her once and then buys the house from her, and proposes on one knee. Sorry I am not buying it! Gretchen spends most of the book not wanting Noah to even work on the house since he does not fit her parameters for eligible men. Also, Gretchen for having a contractor father knew nothing about load-bearing walls and other construction issues that a person should know. My dad built several houses for us and I sure knew what a load-bearing wall was! The entire story did not ring true. I did not hate it but not a keeper either.
Love hate relationship  Oct 17, 2008
I am a fan of chick lit so when I saw the cover I picked this one up.

This is going to be a difficult book for me to review because I actually had a love/hate relationship with it.

First off, I am a little annoyed that this is a christian based book and NOWHERE on the cover or back does it say this. I have no problem with christian based books at all - actually I have read quite a few, but I don't like being deceived and I feel as though by not indicating this anywhere on the covers that is what happened.

I did enjoy the book alot. The main character, Gretchen (or Greta as she is sometimes known) was actually smart and a great character. She did get annoying at times with her "I am woman hear me roar" attitude - all the while knocking down the electricity and breaking pipes. Still, she was quite likeable and not portrayed as a helpless female.

I also liked the storyline of flipping a house. Actually, I am quite impressed with anyone who can do this - so the storyline was one of personal interst to me.

What also worked for me was the great relationship between Gretchen and her dad. It felt wonderful to read about a daugther - father team that was not at each other's throat.

Now, what did not work for me.

First of all, as soon as the name of the male character was introduced you just KNEW where this book was going (which is about page 20). But that's okay, its chick lit and its fun when the girl gets the guy. What was great was the fact that the book does not become all about the relationship and nothing else - so this was a big plus.

However, the whole Gretchen pulls back as Noah is Mr. perfectly wonderful and accepts her wholly because of God was a huge stretch for me and kind of made this book a little cartoonish for me. I mean, Gretchen walks around either clueless about Noah or telling herself that he is not interested and then bam! they have a moment where they gaze intently into each other's eyes and he drools (I added the drool part). Yet, he is there to help her with her dog, her house and everything in between and she STILL remains partly clueless. Nah, this did not work for me.

The other thing I did not like about this book is the last 15 pages or so!! Somebeody gimme a break!!!! If that happened to me, my mother would be locking me in up in my room until I regained my mind!!!!

The writing is fun and an easy read and I have to say that I am now reading Carlson's YA series - which I think will work better with her conservative type of writing.

As I intitially mentioned, I liked this book, but really had to leave my logic at the door.
