Overview
Meaningful or meaningless? Purposeful or pointless? When we look at nature, whether at our living earth or into deepest space, what do we find?In stark contrast to contemporary claims that the world is meaningless, Benjamin Wiker (Moral Darwinism: How We Became Hedonists) and Jonathan Witt reveal a cosmos charged with both meaning and purpose. Their journey begins with Shakespeare and ranges through Euclid's geometry, the fine-tuning of the laws of physics, the periodic table of the elements, the artistry of ordinary substances like carbon and water, the intricacy of biological organisms, and the irreducible drama of scientific exploration itself.Along the way, Wiker and Witt fashion a robust argument from evidence in nature, one that rests neither on religious presuppositions nor on a simplistic view of nature as the best of all possible worlds. In their exploration of the cosmos, Wiker and Witt find all the challenges and surprises, all of the mystery and elegance one expects from a work of genius.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
A Purposeful Meaningful World  Mar 4, 2007
This book enriches our understanding of the natural order and meaningful world through scientic inquiry from ancient to modern times. It also reviews art, in particular the genius Shakespeare, of the highest order not available to the material reductionists who favor randomness, environmental or sexual selection.

Opens your eyes to the reality of designed purpose in the world  Jan 11, 2007
As a Professor of Epistemology I found this book very well written and very well grounded in the various ways of seeing the world. It exposes the weakness of the Scientific Theory of Knowledge in a very clear way.

Who's the one with faith in what is unproven?  Jan 11, 2007
Wiker and Witt have convinced me. At each point I started out with "Aw, c-mon!" and ended with "How come nobody told me about this before?" Years ago I felt a little embarassed for God, that He knew so little about science. Now I'm embarassed for our scientific establishment. This book definitely bolstered my faith. It's clear enough for a dumb sheet metal worker (me) to understand. Why four stars? I don't give anything five.

Amazing  Jan 10, 2007
An amazing book; I couldn't put it down. Deserves to become a classic. This book manages to pull together literature, mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, history of science, and philosophy. And somehow it manages to be, not merely understandable, but very interesting! Moreover, it wonderfully destroys, from every angle, the idea that we are living in a meaningless and purposeless universe.

A caveat: I had already studied the subjects that were discussed (e.g., The Tempest, Macbeth, Hamlet, geometry, the periodic table, cells) so I only had to concentrate on the philosophical train of thought tying them all together. The authors try to include everything that you would need to follow their argument, so you'll be OK even if you've been out of high school or college for a while, but I wouldn't recommend this book for anyone younger than a junior in high school. I think they'd be missing too many of the "prerequisites" and would probably not be able to see the forest for the trees.

Refreshing  Jan 8, 2007
A refreshing read, a wonderful change from the closed-minded approach of some who refuse to look at things from another perspective but know of only one way to disagree with others: derision. This book explores important questions in a challenging but respectful way, without putting anyone down.

Remember the old adage: sarcasm is the lowest form of humour; it is used by losers. This book is a winner!
