More About Frances Hodgson Burnett, Adeline Yen Mah & Margery Hill

Frances Hodgson Burnett Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett (24 November 1849 – 29 October 1924) was an English-American playwright and author. She is best known for her children's stories, in particular Little Lord Fauntleroy (published in 1885-6), A Little Princess (1905), and The Secret Garden (1911).

Frances Eliza Hodgson was born in Cheetham, near Manchester, England. After her father died in 1852, the family eventually fell on straitened circumstances and in 1865 emigrated to the United States, settling near Knoxville, Tennessee. There, Frances began writing to help earn money for the family, publishing stories in magazines from the age of 19. In 1870 her mother died and in 1872 she married Swan Burnett, who became a medical doctor after which they lived in Paris for two years where their two sons were born before returning to the US to live in Washington D.C. There she began to write novels, the first of which (That Lass o' Lowries), was published to good reviews. Little Lord Fauntleroy was published in 1886 and made her a popular writer of children's fiction, although her romantic adult novels written in the 1890s were also popular. She wrote and helped to produce stage versions of Little Lord Fauntleroy and A Little Princess.

Burnett enjoyed socializing and lived a lavish lifestyle. Beginning in the 1880s, she began to travel to England frequently and bought a home there in the 1890s where she wrote The Secret Garden. Her oldest son, Lionel, died of tuberculosis in 1892, which caused a relapse of the depression she struggled with for much of her life. She divorced Swan Burnett in 1898 and married Stephen Townsend in 1900, and divorced him in 1902. Towards the end of her life she settled in Long Island, where she died in 1924 and is buried in Roslyn Cemetery, on Long Island.

In 1936 a memorial sculpture by Bessie Potter Vonnoh was erected in her honour in Central Park's Conservatory Garden. The statue depicts her two famous Secret Garden characters, Mary and Dickon.

Frances Hodgson Burnett lived in Manchester. Frances Hodgson Burnett was born in 1849 and died in 1924.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
A classic story with enduring lessons!  Apr 28, 2010
A childhood favorite, this is the story of Sara, a young girl who faces adversity with courage, grace and a giving spirit. She arrives at a select London boarding school a "Princess" but becomes a charity case upon her father's death. Throughout Sara remembers her father's words that she would always be his princess and endeavors to fulfill that promise. Sara's princess is not spoiled and demanding, but kind, gracious and giving.

In a time where girls are constantly questioning themselves, these are words we all need to hear: "I am a princess. All girls are. Even if they live in tiny old attics. Even if they dress in rags, even if they aren't pretty, or smart, or young. They're still princesses. All of us. Didn't your father ever tell you that? Didn't he?"

I also highly recommend the version with Tasha Tudor illustrations. They are lovely and Tasha certainly studied her fair share of period clothing to know exactly the right way to illustrate this story.
Read, this is Important, some of the facts in these reviews are NOT true  Dec 27, 2009
I've been reading the reviews and there is nothing really left to say except...

Yes, it is sad that Sara's father is never reunited with her but the joy that is expressed when Sara meets her father's old friend makes up for that.
But, no, Sara does not leave behind Becky; Becky actually becomes her new maid. Read the book thoroughly and you will see that no body gets left behind.

That is all I have to say.
Best book I have ever read  Nov 4, 2009
If you only read one book in your life than this should be it. I am an avid reader and have considered this to be my favorite book for many years. The imagary is inchanting, the story inspiring and captivating. This book should be able to inspire girls and women of all ages if they just take the time to read it.
Bah.  Jul 29, 2009
I love the original book, but this one was filled with pictures and it came with no locket, which is what I wanted.

No wonder it was on sale for a penny.
A Very Cute Read!  Jun 17, 2009
This book would be a cute birthday present for a little girl, I'd say around the age of 11 or 12. A cute, classic story of a rich girl reduced to rags, but maintaining her hope, optimism, and imagination
