Item Description...
Mitford's village rector, Father Tim, is running scared. He can no longer deny (even to himself), that he's in love with his neighbor, Cynthia Coppersmith. Cynthia, after all, sees in him a man of warmth and daring-if only he'll meet her halfway. But now a wealthy widow is pursuing Father Tim with hot casseroles. And the mysterious Cousin Meg has moved into the rectory, bag and baggage not to mention uninvited. Abounding with characters both old and new, A Light in the Window compels readers to do something they treasure: laugh out loud.

More About Jan Karon

Jan Karon Born Janice Meredith Wilson in 1937, Jan Karon was raised on a farm near Lenoir, North Carolina. Karon knew at a very early age that she wanted to be a writer. She penned her first novel when she was just 10 years old, the same year she won a shirt-story contest organized by the local highschool.

Karon married as a teenager and hand a daughter, Candace. At 18, Karon began working as a receptionist for a Charlotte, N.C. advertising agency. She advanced in the company after leaving samples of her writing on the desk of her boss, who eventually noticed her talent. Karon went on to have a highly successful career in the field, winning awards for ad agencies from Charlotte to San Francisco. In time, she became a creative vice president at the high-profile McKinney & Silver, in Raleigh. Wile there she won the prestigious Stephen Kelly Award, with which the Magazine Publishers of America honor the year's best print campaign.

During her hears in advertising, Karon kept alive her childhood ambition to be an author. At the age of 50 she left her career in advertising and moved to Blowing Rock, North Carolina, to pursue that dream. After struggling - and failing - to get a novel underway, Karon awoke one night with a mental image of an Episcopal priest walking down a village street. She grew curious about him, and started writing. Soon, Karon was publishing weekly installments about Father Tim in her local newspaper, the The Blowing Rocket, which saw its circulation double as a result. "It certainly worked for Mr. Dickens", says Karon.

The Father Tim stories became Karon's first Mitford novel, At Home in Mitford. The book has since been nominated three times for an ABBY (American Booksellers Book Of the Year Award), which honors titles that bookstore owners most enjoy recommending to customers. The fourth Mitford novel, A New Song, won both the Christy and Gold Medallion awards for outstanding contemporary fiction in 2000. A Common Life, In This Mountain, and Shepherd's Abiding have also won Gold Medallion awards. Out to Canaan was the first Mitford novel to hit the New York Times bestseller list, subsequent novels have debuted on the New York Times list, often landing the #1 spot.

Karon says her character-driven work seeks to give readers a large, extended family they can call their own.

Jan Karon currently resides in Blowing Rock, in the state of North Carolina. Jan Karon was born in 1937.

A Light in the Window  Jun 9, 2008
I recently discovered the Mitford Series and have completed books one through 6. A Light in the Window is book two in this charming and captivating series. I had just finished reading a few very heavy books that were wonderful, but draining, and was looking for something light and fun to read. When I began reading the first book in the Mitford Years series I was completely hooked, and now finishing book six I have not been disappointed. I find myself reading and wishing to live in a little town like Mitford.
If this is Christianity...  Apr 15, 2008
In the interest of full disclosure, this is the only book in the series I have read. As some escapism fluff this book hits the spot, but as some model of Christianity its falls woefully short. As an example, the Miss Sadie character pays an exorbitant sum for a wedding reception for a secret relative while treating her black maid pretty shabbily. Why would Luella want to sleep on a couch at the foot of Miss Sadie's bed in the worn out mansion? All the characters from lower socio-economic groups seem hollow, but I guess that makes it easier to swallow the social injustice.

I guess the lack of four-letter words and premarital sex makes this a "Christian" book. It certainly isn't the behavior of the characters.

Bring on the cocoa...  Mar 30, 2008
Jan Karon knows how to make a body feel comfy. Even if all that ever happened in Mitford was an occasional bake sale and the change of seasons, that's enough if we can spend it with Father Tim and crew. This book, however, gives us the idea that just perhaps Father Tim might not be alone with his dog forever. I'm ready for Book Three!
Gets even better!  Jan 21, 2008
I read this as soon as I finished Book I, and was not disappointed. The story of Father Tim and his neighbor Cindy continued. Karon portrayed the pitfalls of falling in love can be just as difficult at 60 as during the teen years. After a rocky beginning, the couple begins to cement their relationship through a series of beautiful letters over a period of months when she goes away to New York.
Other characters' stories also continued. Although Mitford is a 'feel-good' read, Karon doesn't shy away from difficult situations and near-tragedies. She's a gifted storyteller. As someone who grew up in the Episcopal Church, but who hasn't returned to it in decades, it was nice to revisit it through the eyes of Father Tim.
A Very Bright Star Indeed  Jan 12, 2008
First, I'd like to say that I found no "cafeteria Christianity" in this book. The story was enjoyable and had very meaningful substance, something I think we all need to read more of these days. This particular story shows that there is a purpose for everything, even so-called bad things, even though we always don't realize it right away. Poor Atheism is the complete opposite. This book is eloquently written by a wonderful wordsmith. This writer highly recommends. At least to me, the essence that reverberated in my mind depicted a "contending for the faith" in the sojourn of life. The undertone inherent within the pages carried much weight in my humble opinion. Anyone who is a genuine seeker of meaning in their life, this is your stop! If you are a joyless searcher for joy, then do read this novel and find some.....Home to Holly Springs (Father Tim, Book 1)The Den of Iniquity
