Item Description...
In this day and age, "family" can mean almost anything, and for author David M. Thomas, it has. Father of seven and foster father to over seventy children, as well as a teacher for more than forty years, Thomas views family life as the primary way God calls us to holiness. A Community of Love examines spiritual aspects of family life, such as: Rites of passage Making mealtime sacred The power--and pressure--of parenthood Praying together Creating a natural learning environment The future of the family With Scripture, reflections, essays and poems, Thomas draws on his vast storehouse of experience and knowledge to provide inspiring examples of how to nurture a spiritually fulfilling home life within the modern complexities of "family."

Enjoy the Journey  Mar 15, 2007
Thomas, the eldest of four children, entered a religious community at 18, and left just short of ordination to follow a different call, which ultimately led to marriage and family. He and his wife had five children, took in more than 70 foster babies, and, near retirement age, adopted two toddlers in danger of being abandoned. Thomas worked as a teacher for 40 years. He also created a graduate program in family ministry and adult religious education at Regis University in Denver, Co. His hope for A Community of Love is that it will "open our eyes to God's hidden presence, where life and love meet, ignite and create anew, day after day."

The book's major emphasis is God's presence in the ordinary aspects of life, "from bathtubs to the dinner table." To develop a sense of that everyday presence, Thomas writes, we must "look more intensely, listen more carefully, think more imaginatively, and feel more attentively." We need also to overcome four serious obstacles to finding God in family life: anxiety, stress, clouded vision, and fear. He explains major causes, symptoms, and remedies for each. Throughout he offers detailed examples, such as characteristics of evangelization within families and rituals that strengthened his own family's spirituality.

Each section begins with a quotation from Pope John Paul II or Pope Paul VI and ends with one of Thomas' original poems. The last of these, "Are We There Yet?" addresses the family car trip most parents will recognize, but shifts slightly in the final stanza: "Blessed are those who accept that/we're not there yet/and enjoy the ride."
