Reviews - What do our customers think?
An excellent introduction  Mar 23, 2010
The title says it all, but it's not really for complete beginners. This book is best for anyone who has some understanding of electronics but is new to building radios. For those people this book will give a good to designing and building radios, with the emphasis on designing. The radios are simple receivers for the AM band but rather than just give rip-off circuits, the book explains how you can design your own radios. If you can follow this through you will have a good practical knowledge of radio design. You can then move on to more complex circuits.

To make best use of this book you will
o Know how to read schematics
o Be able to solder and know general construction techniques at beginner level
o Be able to substitute modern transistors for obsolete types.

This book will not provide you with
o VHF or UHF designs
o FM receivers
o Complete circuits and PCB layouts

Chapter headings
1. Antenna circuits - well written introduction to LC circuits
2. Antenna and antenna coupling
3. Semiconductor diodes and their characteristics
4. The diode detector - good explanation of peak (AM) detectors and FM detectors such as discriminators and ratio detectors
5. Transistors
6. Understanding transistor characteristics
7. Audio amplifiers - with some practical circuits
8. Regenerative receivers - gives a circuit for an AM receiver, but beware - in some places regenerative receivers are banned from the AM band.
9. The superhet - gives practical circuits and design principles for superheterodyne AM receivers.
10. Interstage connections (couplings)
11. Field effect transistors- less satisfactory. Little detail here.
12. Miscellaneous circuits - tone controls and tuning indicators
13. Checking radio circuits - a poor guide to trouble-shooting

The problem with all older books is that they will often specify obsolete semiconductors but this should not stop you. All the semis mentioned have modern substitutes that are cheaper and which perform better than the originals. Common types like the BC546, 547 & 548, 2N2222, BC107, 108, 109, PN100, 2N3053 and BD139 & 140 will cover most of the circuits here. The transistors specific are all NPN but for better performance you should use NPN types which are more easily found. You will need to adjust the power supply to suit.
