More About Russell Hoban & Lillian Hoban

Register your artisan biography and upload your photo! David Small won the 2001 Caldecott Medal for So You Want to Be President by Judith St. George. His many books include The Gardener, The Friend, George Washington's Cows, Imogene's Antlers and Hoover's Bride. He is also the illustrator for Russell Hoban's The Mouse and His Child. His most recent title is My Senator and Me: A Dog's Eye View of Washington D.C, written by Senator Edward M. Kennedy.
After receiving a Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale, David Small taught drawing and printmaking on the university level for 14 years. He lost his job in the 1980s due to cutbacks. This brought both a crisis and a commitment to begin working on combining his love of art and writing. Submitted to more than 20 publishers, his first book Eulalie and the Hopping Head was eventually published in 1982.
Small works with watercolor, pen and ink, and pastel. His later works have a much softer look, but they continue to include his trademark attention to small details that beg to be poured over again and again. Growing as an artist is important to Small. He feels he has not yet done his best work, and enjoys challenging himself with new ideas, styles and media.
Small lives in Mendon, Michigan, with his wife, the writer Sarah Stewart.

Russell Hoban currently resides in London. Russell Hoban was born in 1925.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Great beginning reader  Apr 14, 2008
Frances wants a new china tea set, but her friend convinces her to buy a plastic red one. Will they stay friends?

The writing is easy and pleasant. I highly recommend this book for first and second graders who are just beginning to read books.
Still a Pleasure to Read  Jan 3, 2008
A Bargain for Frances was one of my daughter's favorite books as a child. She asked me to buy it for my 3 year old granddaughter, and it was just as cute and entertaining as ever. It has a good lesson hidden in with the pleasure, too, and small children will love the badger theme.
Couldn't stop laughing  Aug 24, 2007
... at poor Thelma, when she realized that Frances had turned the tables. I read the Frances books when I was young and was delighted to rediscover them for/with my own children. My kids have a strong sense of fair play (don't most?) and they loved to see Frances outwit her sometime friend. Of course I did remind them that deception may not be the best solution for this kind of problem, but the poetic justice was hilarious to behold. And I appreciate that they found a solution themselves, and amicably at that, without needing to haul in parents or counselors or the police.

On a sadder note, the illustration in my copy doesn't seem quite up to par with some of the other Frances books. Frances looks almost cold, she's missing so much fur. That provided a little lesson for the kids too... "How would you improve this picture? What did you like better about the other pictures?"
Great book  Aug 8, 2007
I remember my mom reading this to my sister and I when we were young. It's so cute. I love the illustrations being in black and white, and the ambiguity of Frances' species. It's a great story about envy over another person's things and about cheating your friends. I've kept the image of the little tea set in my mind for almost 30 years. I'm so glad I found this book again and hope your kids find it as special as I do. The other Frances books are a treasure as well. -M. Farrell
The fine art of problem solving  Dec 23, 2006
What does a child do when a friend plays a selfish trick against her (or him for that matter)?
What kind of role models do children have today for the kind of problem solving in this classic?
As timeless as a fable, this book was published in 1970. Frances takes a pro-active role to deal with a friend who trys to take advantage of her. In addition, they remain friends but on a more equal basis. The art work and humor add to the enjoyment of learning a valuable lesson.

I suggest reading this and discussing real experiences and successful or unsuccessful attempts at solutions. This 64 page book is also available in Spanish. ISBN: 0060887036
